While we will never know for sure,
our late lamented Penelope Beagleburger
appeared to have been an abandoned
hunting dog, given where she was
found (in the Pinelands of SE Burlington
County, NJ) and the fact that she
turned out to have an old bullet wound
in her. But she also seemed to have
been picked up mercifully quickly,
as she was not emaciated or covered
in ticks, etc, etc.
The same cannot be said for several
abandoned pets that we have taken
in at the AAC, a shelter where we DO
nurse many dogs back to health
(and spay/neuter, HW check and
bring up to date for rabies and
distemper, etc ALL of the dogs
we take in). Anyway, we took in
an emaciated parti-color Cocker
found abandoned around an
apartment complex just this past
Wednesday. He is slowly improving
and it could take several
weeks for him to regain all the
weight he needs to.
Yes, some hunters do despicable
things. But you don't have to look
to far to find despicable things
being done to dogs in the urban and
suburban worlds that so often
look down on the rural world.
