My mice had a dozen babies three weeks ago. I seperated the father the day
after.

The babies will be ready to wean from the mother Sunday or so. Now, can I
seperate the male babies and place them in to the cage with their father?
Will the father attack them as unwelcome, or should it be OK?

Aloha

No you can't reintroduce them as they will fight, almost certainly one or
more will get killed...for future reference, you should have left the father
in with the rest of his family, then when you want to seperate, he could go
with the rest of his sons while the daughters stay with mum, the old wives
tale of him eating the young is just that - the only time a male will eat
newborns is if he knows he is not the father and even then it is quite rare,
I recently put a male with a pregnant female and he got along with 'his' new
family just fine (the previous male died of old age the day before and the
female was almost ready to give birth, although I did not know she was
pregnant at the time, they had been together for six months without a
litter)

Thank's for the reply. I took the father out the morning after the babies
were born in an attempt to prevent another pregnancy. The mom mouse seems to
be getting larger again, so I'm afraid in the 8 hours he was with the mom
and babies he impregnated her again, SHUCKS!

Looks like I'll have to get another cage.

Thanks

Yep she's pregnant!...you can keep the brothers and sisters together for
another week or so until you have time to find a cage, but no later than 35
days old or some of the females will be pregnant too...the second litter
will need the same treatment in a few weeks time, in this scenario you can
keep all the females from both litters together, there will be a bit of
squeaking as they allocate their hierarchy, but the second lot of males will
need to be kept seperate from their older brothers...males from one litter
cannot be kept with males from another unless they are introduced at 3 weeks
old, (IE if they are born to different parents in different cages, but at
the same time) even then they fight like pit bulls but all tend to bond and
grow up together, and early squabbles are soon forgotten about...all females
of all ages tend to bond fairly quickly

I think that's a good idea only if you want yet another litter, since
the female typically goes into estrus again immediately after birth.
