I have frequently handled baby mice. I've even cleaned their entire cage and
replaced all their bedding less than twenty four hours after their birth. the
babies have never suffered, and the mothers have never become upset or rejected
their babies. one or two have attacked my hand when it came near the nest, but
most have acted very calm, even the ones that were not overly tame. that said,
it's always good policy to leave the nest alone, and besides your mice might be
different from mine. you'll see the babies from time to time, and they'll be
out of their nest soon enough. make sure you have a plastic exercise wheel for
them to run on - watching baby mice trying to learn to use the wheel is
hilarious and very fun.

have another cage standing by for when you need to separate out the males from
the females. if you can't tell them apart, ask a pet shop to help you. do
this at about four weeks, in fact a few days before that time.

In the past when my mice gave birth I would leave the handling until the
baby s had got all their fur and when they still had their eyes closed. It
is a good idea to handle the baby s before their eyes are open, then they
can get used to humans.
