hi there,
nearly had an accident with my tiel buddy tonight and it got me
thinking.
there is no pet ambulance service near where i live and i cant count
on my vet to be reachable during the night.

is there any basic first aid procedures i could use to improve his
chances ? i see the main threats as

1 falling & breaking bones
2 being stepped on/crushed
3 being burned by falling into coffee or gulping down a hot item (like
a rice grain) from my plate

i know this is an unpleasant subject but i realized that apart from
dialing 911 i can rely on my first aid training for human accidents,
but i dont have a clue what to do for birds.

thx
F

You forgot a few.

He could be:
Thrown against the wall by a snow blower in your house.
Caught in your furnace fan by squeezing through the bar on the grills.
Crushed by you when you fall down after having a heart attack.

We have a small radio linked emerg. call button around our 'tiels
neck. If he gets into trouble or falls down he can poke the button
with his beak and an avion ambulance will be dispatched via the A.M.S.
There is only a small charge for this but the tiny little vehicle
tends to get caught in the snow ruts from the full sized car tires on
the road. Bird Star is working for a solution to this as we speak.

you need to concentrate on prevention. Little creatures are difficult to
help once injured. Hospital cage should be on hand. Your vet's number
should be know, and a 24 hour emergency vet is good.

Prevention.

Oh yeah, The last and best suggestion is to:
- take the medication prescribed by your shrink.

We have a square cage which is sold as a cockatiel cage. Ours managed to get
his head through the bars and we had trouble releasing him. Fortunately he
is very tame and seems none the worse for it.

He's also managed to get a claw stuck in a clothes peg which holds his
greens.

However well you watch them, anything can go wrong.

Mine does the same thing! His cage was also sold as a cockatiel cage,
but yet he can manage to get his head between the bars. He doesn't do
this often. I think he only does it when he's in his mood to tease me
because he knows I make a big deal out of it. He'll only do it maybe
twice in a row until I see him do it, than I start yelling at him. I
guess it's his way of getting my attention. He always gets his head out
between the bars though - he's never had a problem releasing himself. I
tried using a cage with bars that are closer together, but he seems to
manage to get his wings caught in between the bars! He likes to spread
his wings sometimes.

Yes! You are right about anything can go wrong, and sometimes it usually
does.
