If they are small, they must be pretty young. I bought about a 2" goldfish
from the pet shop about four months ago and it is now about 4" in length.
I had a goldfish for about five years in a 10-gallon tank and it got up to
about 8" in length. Poor fellow, but I was about 15 at that time and didn't
have a whole lot of money to get a bigger tank.

Ingrid is correct on this, although scales that fall off and regrow do not
inherit the rings so they will start from scratch >> Stay informed about: Goldfish age |

Sorry Folks,
That is an old wives tale. I have fish right now that are just a year old
and they have 4 rings on their scales.

If I buy a pet, I count that day as his/her birthday and a year from
that day I just "Say" One year. If its a small goldfish it can't be that
old.

Isnt there some way of telling by the size of the fish?
Mine are all quite young, Around 1 and a half inches long (excluding tail)
Even if its only a very rough approximation it would be nice to know whether
they are 3 months, 6 months, 1 year old etc.
Experienced GF breeders must have an idea of how old their 1 inch fish are?

Tom,
The way I understand it is this works best for pond fish, the cycles of very
cold weather
will make the rings longer or shorter (can't remember which) and from this you
can gather an idea of how old a fish is, not necessarily 100%. >> Stay informed about: Goldfish age |

Geezer,
My fish are in ponds. I only bring breeders in in the winter. My winters
are usually pretty mild. Water temps still get in the high 30's, very
little ice stays.
