It does depend on the rats on the amount of noise they make and what sort of
toys are in the cage. Their age comes into it too - younger rats want to
play more, which involves a lot of jumping and darting around and can get
quite noisy! I am an extremely light sleeper - I wake up at the slightest
sound - but have slept ok in the past with a couple of rats in the same
room, but they were older rats (and male - females tend to be more active,
thus noisier) that didn't run about much. Just drinking from the water
bottle used to wake me up or when they were munching on something, but I
became accustomed to these small sounds, so much so it didn't bother me
after a while. At the moment I have three male rats, one is about two and a
half and very quiet, but the other two are youngsters and chase each other
round, playfight etc - can be very noisy, so I'm glad they are in my living
room now and not the bedroom!
You asked about other rodents - if you want quiet ones do not get gerbils -
gawd mine used to drive me nuts night and day with the noise they made. And
I know many people who have been kept awake at night by their pet hamster!
