Hi Guys

On Friday I noticed that Coco wasnt his normal self but wasn't too worried.
I went away for the weekend and left a friend to care for the ratties and I
know they were cared for. Tonight I went to check on the boys and feed them
and Coco came to the door so I lifted him up. He has lost a stack of weight
over the weekend, has a ... i'm not going to finish the post as I think our
boy isnt going to last the night. Wish him a speedy pass over.

Maybe Coco has an obstruction making it difficult for him to swallow
or even breath.

Lilly had something caught in her throat and she drooled like crazy
and becames very listless. She did work it out in the end by herself,
but I have read that sometimes rats can't get the blockage out by
themselves and that a vet is required to suction the blockage out.
Mention this to your vet. I hope Coco makes it, poor sweetie.

I'm so sorry April... can you try to get him to eat some Boost or Ensure
or any other meal replacement, this may help get some weight on him,
keep him hydrated, sometimes that makes a huge difference. Give him
pedialyte or even gatorade.
Can you describe other symptoms?

Hi Joanne

I'm really at a loss as to whats going on with him, like I say he was off a
bit on Friday and then I was away from Friday night till late Sunday night,
I checked on them quickly and they all seemed okay but didnt see Coco close
enought to see the problems. Today I've gone to feed them and Coco came to
the cage door and I took him out to realise he's lost a stack of weight in
days and I mean a stack of weight, he seems a bit dehydrated so I've offered
him some water and I've also offered him food which he's not interested in.
He's breathing is irregular and laboured, he is not energetic and I spent
ages with him just laying on me before I put him in his cage with food. I've
quanrenteed him to a cage on his own but near the other ratties but not near
enough in case it's somethign big going on. He's also dribbling and I think
it's a bit smelly although I've checked his teeth and they seem fine. I'm
hoping he'll last the night and my money comes through tommorow and then
i'll take him to the RSPCA vets.

<snip>

If he's 18+, it may be a pituitary tumour, if so, there's really nothing
you can do except to slow the progression with prednisone. Getting him
antibiotics may help as well if he's got an infection somewhere.

Hi

I'm not sure how old he is as he came from a pet shop but he was definitely
adult when we got him. What are the common symptoms of that? They have back
teetch right, what are the chances of them being over grown?

For pituitary tumour the most common symptoms are loss of rear end
mobility, hard time holding on to food, lethargy, extreme appetite but
unable to use teeth to chew, they can lap up soft foods though.
Sometimes you'll see them shake their heads, have shakes all through out
their body.
About the back teeth, perhaps he has a tooth abscess?
