Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents>rats (more info?)

Hi!

One of my rats had a stroke (I think), about a month and a half ago.
She was tilting a lot over to one side, and she was falling over all
the time. She also had little controll over her front feet and that
made it difficult for her to eat as well as walking properly. It
seemed like she was getting worse and worse, so I was seriously
concidering taking her to the vet to put her to sleep. Now I'm really
glad I didn't, because now she's walking straight again, and she's not
tilting to the side much anymore :-) and this has happend over night!
Now she even manages to climb on top of the cage and down again
without falling down (wich was hopeless a couple of days ago). She's
getting a bit old (2 years on the 10'th this month), but after her
"recovery" I'm hoping I'll be having her around for a good while yet.
Only problem is, she's still having difficulty eating much of the rat
food I'm giving them. I've been feeding her some cheese, majonaise and
a bit of meet in addition to the rat food. The reason I'm giving her
this is because she's lost a lot of weight since she had the stroke,
and I want to fatten her up a bit. So the thing I'm wondering about is
if I should be giving her this? (especially wondering about the
majonaise) What other things can I feed her to get her weight up? (has
to be something that's easy to chew, as she's having problems with
hard stuff)
Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried baby cereal..? We have stuff here called Farex...its powdery
stuff and you mix it with milk.. for my Ratties I substitute it with Low Fat
Soya Milk... these spoilt buggers get this every morning..:) My guys go
gaga over Egg mixed with a little mayonnaise too... It hasn't hurt them...
Im sorry I can't think of "fattening foods" off the top of my head at the
moment, but best of luck with your Ratty.

Regards Kate.
