I live in SW Oregon and though the Meadowlark is the state bird we
have never seen one at our home. I have read some about this bird and
have learned that they nest in tall grass areas and I have since left
about 1/2 acre of pasture uncut which is immediately next to a small
pond. Still no Meadowlarks.

Any thoughts as to how I might improve my chances of attracting them
will be appreciated.

Out here on the prairies we have lots of pasture and lots of Western
meadowlarks. I tend to suspect that they would like more space than
half an acre of grassland. One research study found that the average
territory claimed by a mated pair of meadowlarks was just over 3 acres
(12,406 square meters). In our area we have large spaces of open
grassland with clumps of bush. I've only noticed meadowlarks when they
perch on fence posts and telephone posts. They don't seem to like the
bushy areas.

I was up in a Cessna 172 today--as a passenger. When we rolled onto
the taxiway after landing, I spotted the first meadowlark I've seen in
years. It was in the short grass along the taxiway.

We also had to maneuver to avoid a turkey vulture on final approach.

We have just short of 3 acres but we are in a developed area with
homes all around with approx 3 acres each and the neighbors are
concerned about brush fires. That is why I have left only about 1/2
acre uncut. When we lived in California we were in an area of large
uncut fields and had lots of Western Meadowlarks. Fences and fence
posts are where I've mostly seen these birds and we are fenced so that
also I had hoped might attract them.

Thanks for your info and posted link.
