All,

It is incredibly hard to write this to you all, because I just never
imagined it would be our turn one day. Zoë, our beloved bunny, crossed the
bridge last Friday. Even though we feel sad, empty and miss her a lot we
know that she had the best life a bunny could ask for and it just must have
been her time.

It was all very sudden to her and to us. She had been living in Spain -
nothing in the world would make her more happy that to be in Spain - for
many months in a row now, and she was doing fine. Sofia came flew in on
Thursday and went to see her, and took her out to the garden and she played
and ate the plants (like always). She was happy. Sofia and I went to see her
Friday morning, and found that she was lethargic. Because she has been
having problems with worms in the last two days, we assumed she was feeling
bad about that. We washed her butt and noticed that she would not pee and
had a lot of calcium. After we dried her up, we offered her a craisin. Zoë
would never decline a craisin, and when she did we decided to take her to
the emergency vet hospital.
There, the vet diagnosed her with immediate kidney failure due to - most
likely - cancer. We were baffled, because we came in for something else and
suddenly we saw her slip from us. She was in pain, but not in distress.
Knowing that the end was near, we cried and held her and gave her lots of
kisses. We told her to wait for us and her Flopsy, whom she adores, at the
bridge. That we loved her. After minutes, she died in our presence. We held
her and told her that we'd miss her.

It feels empty without her. We try to focus now on Flopsy. He needs lots of
attention due to his arthosis and spondylosis. He misses her too, we can
tell. We will spread Zoë's ashes in the garden where she loved to spend her
time, between the roses and the herbs.

She has had a good life, Sofia says. With her brother Flopsy, that she fell
in love with the moment she came to our house. In Spain, which she enjoyed
so much more than Amsterdam (she would get depressed for days when we took
her back to Amsterdam). With the pampering, the food that she got and the
craisins. I think she must have had craisin juice running through her veins.
We are happy for her because she was playful until the end, and we think
that because she was so happy she did not take notice of the pain from her
kidney. We are happy for her because she is no longer in pain. It was just
her time. She was a few months short of turning seven. She is reunited with
Ron, her brother Boton and many other bunnies from APR.

We miss you, Zoë. You will always be in our hearts.

Erik, Sofia and Flopsy with Zoë at the bridge.

Dear Sofia,

"Our turn" comes to each of us at some point. We can't avoid it, and it is
never easy.

It sounds like Zoe had a blessed life with you and died in a happy place.

You may find that your relationship with Flopsy blossoms without Zoe there.
But in the meantime you have a rift in the tapestry of your lives, and that
demands grieving--another event we cannot escape. The apr bunch is so great
at support. Hang in there.

Hugs,
Michele, Christopher Rabbit, and the giant long-tailed barking bunny
(And Tibs looking down fondly, I imagine, at how well Christopher Rabbit is
taking care of the human)

I am heartsick for you to have lost your beautiful girl so soon. I am
happy for all of you that she had good moments until her time. She
probably as well as Flopsy, has put in more international miles than
any other bunny that we have come to know and she is looking down on
her family with love. Carla Liza and Jodie.

*heard from the bridge*

Tibs: There's another bun coming up behind me and Buttercup!
Zamboni: A Dutch-Spanish Bunny!
Bucky: Hmmm....are you sure about that 'Dutch" part?
Zamboni: From Amsterdam-type Dutch.
Bucky: Oh.....Get the gang in gear!

*Patches limbers up for the double back flip binkys, Tika pulls out a
Spanish-Dutch-English-rabbit dictionary, the beth brigade gathers
'round, Rear Admiral Rosie assembles the sailors on deck, Roger gets
out the horn, Chopper and Alice prepare the binky trampoline, Bucky
and Jackie and Mouse round up the entire apr community [Jackie has to
drag a recalcitant Ralphable from his favorite chair and of course he
won't take his paws off the remote], Wendy brings out a big bowl of
craisins while keeping Cartman from scarfing them before the welcoming
party, and Sedgewick coaches them in how to greet this new arrival*

*Zoë walks across the bridge, comfortable again*

Bienvenidos, Zoë!

*Double back-flip binkys, streamers, horn honks and craisins fly as
Zoë is warmly greeted by her apr bridge family*

Sophie, Erik and Flopsy ... What a horribly sad day for all of you, and
happening so fast. Thank goodness Zoe didn't suffer for long but that makes
it harder on the loved ones left behind.

I have a beautiful song that says "I have family on both sides" meaning our
earthly world and the heavenly one. It always makes me cry to listen to it,
but it is so beautiful. I know this is also true for our beloved furry
friends. Zoe is now with those she loved who went on before her and you have
beautiful memories that would have never been possible without Zoe's
addition to your family.
