Did the vet stick a needle in to it and have a look at the cells under the
microscope? I'd insist on it (especially given that this is his first one).
99 times out of 100*, it will be a lipoma (fatty lump), and so nothing to
worry about in the slightest (unless location makes it get in the way of
motion). These are very common (one of my dogs has at least a dozen of them
in different places of different sizes). The only thing is 1/100 times, it
can be something more serious that you're going to want to catch early.
If you're vet didn't stick a needle in (technical term being to 'aspirate'
the lump), then I'd probably call him up, and tell him you'd like to have it
done, even though you know its unlikely, you want to be totally sure. It's a
quick procedure and relatively painless.
