We got a new dog... that is the dog from hell. We've always had shelter
dogs, and actually lost one a couple months ago when she went in to be fixed
(anesthesia killed her). We we thought it was time to save another.
Usually my mom and I go to pick out a new family member, and we've always
picked good ones. This time my dad went. Bad idea if you ask me.

"Cooper" is a one year, two month old Yellow Lab. He was found wandering
with his mother around the Foster and Smith pet supply store. My guess is
that someone dropped them off unwanted.

This dog is wild and untamed and almost kills you when you go for a walk!
He can't walk normal, he just runs, pulls and jumps around like crazy. 100%
UNtrained, bordering on stupidest dog in the world if you ask me. But my
parents just said he is young and untrained and they are going to call this
lady who runs a live-in 2-week training program. I hope it is soon!

I'm just venting here, but I swear I have never seen a dog this wild and
unruly. He is also afraid of the dark and won't go down stairs into my
basement apartment. He is good with our six cats, which I thought for sure
he would have eaten already! Cooper needs some serious help!

I would guess, that rather than just being 'untrained' and 'stupid' its
more the case that he's full of energy, and has no real outlet for it.
You take him out for a walk, and he's just so full of excitement, that
it makes him virtually unwalkable.

The key is, and I know this sounds stupid, don't let it. When you go out
on a leash (which should be very frequent right now) don't let him go a
single step when he's pulling. If you aren't strong enough, this may be
difficult, maybe try getting your Dad to take him (after all, he picked
him). Wait him out, but as soon as he stops pulling, more forward.
You'll probably only get half a step at first, and you'll look awfully
silly, but it works. The thing is, you can't let pulling lead to bring
the reward (i.e. the walk). As long as he pulls, don't move. As soon as
he stops, move forward.
It might help to work on teaching him sit, inside first. Then you can
tell him to sit when he's bouncing off the end of the leash, which will
release the tension on the leash, and you can move forward again.
Once they start to get it, they'll still break occasionally, and think
about pulling. The most effective way I've found of dealing with this,
is when they get to within about a foot of the end of their leash, say
easy, then give the leash a quick little tug. The tug should be such
that if they slowed down when you said easy, they will feel little to
nothing, but if they ignored you, they'll get a quick tug.
Most dogs I've dealt with are relatively easy to train not to be
pullers, When I was volunteering at the humane society, I'd always walk
the ones marked 'strong puller'. Normally by the end of a half hour
walk, they'd be more or less loose leash walking for me.

Another thing I've personally found to be quite helpful, is selecting
the right length for your leash. I have no idea how many people I've
seen with those stupid extendi-leashes who use them as a crutch to stop
their dog from 'pulling'.

Ideal leash length I've seen is ~6'. Shorter than that, and they don't
have the opportunity to walk loose (unless they are walking on top of
you). Longer than that, and they just have too much of an opportunity to
build up momentum.

yes. a normal leash kept as a bracelet, and no way you'll lose the leash.
the shorter the best, twist it around your wrist.
just a question of gravity and inertia. just dont let them get runnning.

I'm not sure I'd go as short as possible. It has to be long enough that
it has the opportunity to be loose. I wouldn't go less than ~4'. (You
can get some 1' leashes. I don't like those, as no mater what the dog
does the leash is almost certainly going to be tight).

at need, the collar is right below my wrist. if she calms down, i loose it
all.
actually j usually is unleashed, she's not the by-bye girl.
anyway in years i practiced like a balinese dancer with wrist movements.
we're considering setting up a show :)

Part of the problem was his energy and now that he has been with us a week
he has calmed down considerably. He also now knows his name, which is a big
help in itself. He is learning to sit and stay also. There is a well known
trainer in the next town and next week she is coming over to our house to
spend a couple hours with us, at least to start. Cooper is wonderful in
the house, especially with our SIX cats. LOL But he still is a little too
hyper once he gets outside with the pulling and jumping and just running
around like a lunatic. We need work with him being on a leash the most.

Thanks for asking.

Good to hear he's coming along. One thing I found really help push
Erwin's progress along, was training during meal times. Most labs are
VERY food motivated. What I used to do, was at every meal I'd work with
him, and dole out small rewards of part of his supper by hand for
everything he did right. We'd normally go through about a cup of kibble
this way. Then we'd go for something he knew REALLY well, and reward him
with the rest of his meal.

I tend to stay away from chokers myself. I don't think most people use
them effectively anyways. So many dogs I've seen just learn to ignore
the choke chain, and pull like the dickens anyways. (then again, I'm a
pretty big guy, so I can out pull most dogs if I really care to).

Well this sounds familar. I rescued Luke 7 months ago from a shelter. The
shelter estimated his age the at 3 years. Wrong! A better analysis from his
new vet told us he was 1 year old (if that). Well he is my 3rd dog, and he
has ENERGY. I walk him for 20-30 minutes every morning and then again at
night. He has free run of my fenced yard. We have put him through training.
Did it help? Well a little, but not all issues. First of all he is loving
and gentle with my 2 kids. However he pulls like a freight train if he is
excited when we walk. (choker -shmoker!) He is very sociable with all humans
and most other dogs. He must consider me his rough and tumble buddy, because
the play he chooses for me is very physical, (chasing, steeling things, play
fights and play bites etc.) I know he means no harm, but he is too big, too
strong to play these games. He has gained 20 pounds since weve had him (now
he is 75 lbs. of lean muscle). He Is intelligent and very dominant. Let me
say that again,: very dominant. I must be (or we must be) very stern with
him or he tries to run the household. For instance he might insist that it
is time for a walk, or time to eat, wants my full attention, or time to pick
up my Daughter etc.
When he is calm, he tries to be good. He listens, he behaves, we are all
happy. But when that energy level is up (and it doesnt take much to set him
off) he is hard to quell.
The vet said he might settle down a bit at around 3 years old.
In a nut shell it seems like Luke has too much energy to be good ALL THE
TIME. He can only behave well, intermittently. I know there are many of you
who will say this is unacceptable. Maybe you are right. BUT we are doing the
best we can with him. Right now it may not be enough. I dont know anything
about his past. Maybe the seeds of "wild" were planted then. But it sounds
as if you are having a similar time with Cooper. We are just a little
farthar along. I intend to stand by my
commitment................................much luck,Roy

Golden Lab cross just full of energy & excitement.
All the above posts ring a certain kernel of truth & experience with our
guy. Tucker is now going into his 4th year -thank goodness!!.
We got this 55 lb whirling dervish around 1 year old. He has a heart of
Gold & is in most ways a very well behaved intelligent dog who wants to
please.
But take him for his morning walk in the remote wild mountains of BC (where
we live) he is totally crazy -guaranteed every time. As soon as he sees my
wife put on her coat through the glass door, he starts leaping repeatedly
straight up & down while barking with wild abandon. He will do this for 1
minute or 15 until she comes out of the house. We have tried many, many
things over the three years.
Once she takes 3 steps to the pathway he tears at top speed to the base of
the rather steep hill right to the property line & then flies full tilt
back up the hill, barks 2 or 3 times (saying come-on hurry up) & that's the
end of the barking pretty much every day. Put him on a leash at this time of
day & even the phrase 'pulls like a freight train' doesn't do him justice.
Put him in a halter leash & within a week he had pulled so hard he had
friction burns on his underside & worn his hide off. Put a choker on him &
all he does is choke. Let him tear through the forest for an hour & he comes
home a docile sweetheart of a dog. In the house he has a 6 X 8 carpet in the
corner of an open concept living area & he rarely steps off his bounds, even
if we go out for a couple of hours. He won't even touch a dog treat within
his reach on a nearby table unless we give it to him. We've just accepted
his barking as his exuberant way of trying to tell us how excited & happy he
is -not a big deal where we live.

Stepping in late, spending most of my time out at the lake this
winter. Heading back for a few more weeks later today.

Cooper's just like my Buster. He was a handful to say the least.
Same circumstances, Humane Society, wild and strong. 85+ pounds
of energy. He once pulled a car over 100 feet down my driveway.
Tied his leash to the bumper, put the car in neutral and let
him go. I think he would have pulled the car all the way back
to town if we let him.

I found the Halti type of restraint to work well.

Buster could turn around and pull himself out of the Halti.
I used a short strap from the Halti to his collar so that he was
still clipped onto his leash if he managed to slip out of
the Halti.

You have to remember that Labs are big overgrown pups for
2 to 3 years. He will settle down, they all do.

Be patient. One day soon you will discover the best buddy
you've ever had.
