Am I right in saying the Welsh Springer is a bit calmer and laidback
than an English Springer?

Depends on the individual dog.

And what side of the pond you're on--the UK Springer is a fairly
different animal than the U.S. Springer, and Welshies are so rare over
here that it might be difficult to say. The couple I've met have been
less energetic in general than the Springers I've known, but two is
hardly a large sample size.

Over in sunny Scotland (rain today and stronfg winds!)

Over here there seems to be a general theme in some of the books I've
read that English Springers are slightly more excitable than the
Welsh Springers and therefore possibly need a bit more attention to
keep them from being destructive.

I'm just looking at it from the prospect of a new dog which is going
to be fun outside but not a big hassle in doors. If only Springers
came with a Greyhounds indoor manner! But then it wouldn't be a
Springer!!

I don't know where RObin is, but around here, there are quite a few Welshies (a
little more laid back, not as up a dog, as well as English springers (Field
bred, VERY energetic, English bred, high energy, good off switch, and American
bench, usually more laid back)

They all have distinct personalities within the breed, but the Welshman is a
different dog than the ESS. They are friendly but not as boisterous with new
friends. I have found ESS a bit easier to train...
