Post subject: Water problems? My Firemouth Cichlids died =(
Archived from groups: rec>aquaria>freshwater>cichlids (more info?)

In the past 3 months, I have had 2 firemouth cichlids die. One was
several 2 years old and one was 1 year old. I am wondering if there
might be something wrong with my water. I have tested the water this
morning, after finding my firemouth dead, to find the following:

pH = 7.0
NO2 = < 0.3 mg/L
GH = 7 dH
KH = 14 dH
NH3 / NH4 = 0 mg/L

I know that my KH is high, but I attribute this to my pH buffer. I
was told by my lfs that this wouldn't be a problem. The fish
themselves acted fine prior to death. They didn't change eating
habits or have any noticable diseases. I also have tiger barbs and a
pleco in the tank with them, and they all seem to be fine. Does
anyone have any ideas? Am I just unlucky, or is there something that
I am missing??? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

-John

The KH is not an issue.
0.3 Nitrite seems a bit high.
You may have mesured it on the falling edge
of a spike.
How big is the tank?
How many other fish in there and how big is each?
How often do you change 20-30% of the water?
How often do you rinse filter media?
Do you use dechlorinated/aged water or straight out the
tap for water change and/or filter cleanup?

Kodiak -

The Nitrite was listed as (less than) 0.3 (it wasnt measurable). The
tank is a 29 gallon. There are 5 tiger barbs (all less than an inch)
and a pleco (about 3 inches). My tank gets a 30% change every 3 to 4
weeks. The water that I use is filtered and treated with dechlor. My
filtration system includes an emperor 400 hang on the back, a Magnum
350, and 9watt UV sterilizer. All my media gets changed (not rinsed)
at water changes (at least every month), with the exception of my
biowheels. I try my best to keep my tank spotless. It is always very
clear, and is well established. It is just strange that I have had
two deaths in this tank.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Please post them!

Why do you think there is something wrong with your water?
It could be a disease due to something else??
have you notice symptoms on your firemouth cichlids?
