Brought my degu to a vet because it had long teeth.
For 10 mins of examination, 20 sec of tooth-cutting using a stupid
nail clipper, they charged me 65 $ (cdn) !!!

Next Time I'll know...and cut the teeth myself.

you didn't pay vet to cut your pet's teeth. you paid your vet first to know
how to do it, then to do it. if you know how to do it yourself, hey, that's
great, but to be angry at your vet because he charges for his knowledge is
pointless.

You reckon you have that kind of knowledge without causing indeterminable pain
to the poor creature? Get some wood blocks and branches for your degus to gnaw
on. I've had rodents for the best part of my life, recently (in the last 3
yrs) added degus to that list. I have never had trouble with overgrown teeth on
any of my pets. Use some common sense will you? Rodents gnaw, that's what
they do, that's why they have those huge inscisors at the front! >> Stay informed about: Vets...what a ripoff! |

What a charmer you are, hope the animal welfare people in your country have a
field day when they catch up with you! Do yourself and your animals a favour,
give them all away before you cause any more suffering. >> Stay informed about: Vets...what a ripoff! |

Just curious....how much are you willing to give for your pet ? (say
it would need a major surgery)
Ever thought that some HUMANS dont even have that kind of money for a
year ?

I really don't want to criticize, and truly hate to say this, but when you
take on an animal you take on ALL of it -- medical concerns and all. I have
a horse. Can you imagine the size of my vet bills? I have had him for 15
years. I'm not rich. Over that time, I've foregone lots of things I wanted
because he needed something. Such as removal of half of his thyroid because
of cancer. Most pet owners understand that when their animal needs care,
they should do something about it. Even if it's going to a shelter or a vet
and saying 'I want to help my pet, but I can't afford it. Can you help me
work something out?'. Regardless of the size of the animal, you should
remember that you're dealing with a living thing and act appropriately. Of
course, many people in the USA go without health care because they can't
afford it. That's a fact of life, but it's one they CAN'T get away from.
Animals, once they're in your home, look to you to provide them with the
basic needs. I also think that, according to many locales' laws, 'food,
shelter and access to basic veterinary care' are what distinguishes an
animal that is getting adequate care from one that isn't. So, if you can't
provide all of those, perhaps there might be a better time in your life to
keep pets.

On a scent gland for a gerbil, I paid £25 to have it removed. That's about 56
Canadian dollars.
Our animals give us pleasure, so we pay whatever.

the weight and looking at the rear end...

What are you moaning about?
It *only* cost you a poxy 65 dollars, (that's £29 in UK or $48 in USA), it's
hardly going to break the bank is it?
Less than half a day's wages looking at the average wages for Canada.
You got a bargain, over here the vet usually has a 'consultation' fee of
around £20-£25, then it's everything else on top, so if he carried out a
procedure like that, it would prtobably work out at about £50 or 100
Canadian dollars. >> Stay informed about: Vets...what a ripoff! |

Oh but you miss the point here! Tez only a small animal costing less than the
vet's fees!
Why not just let the animal suffer through ignorance, then march out and get a
new one as the fancy takes you? <sheesh>
BTW LOLO, I have it in mind that you are a wind up merchant with that name.
But I will add this for your perusal: The £25 I paid for a scent gland tumour
on a gerbil, was on a gerbil from the RSPCA costing nothing :o) Does money
matter when something is in pain?
