VALUHEART HEARTWORM

I am interested in any experiences using this Australian med. for heartworm
prevention as an alternative for Heartgard Plus. How long has it been on the
market? It is commonly sold on Ebay for less than half what Heartgard sells
for. Also, is Heargard considered a prescription and therefore not sold on
Ebay.

I don't know anything about the Valuheart product you mentioned.
However, depending on how many dogs you (or you and your
friends) have, you can save from 85% to more than 95% of the
cost of monthly heartworm prevention by using Ivomec (1%
ivermectin sterile solution) for cattle and swine. This drug can be
legally purchased from farm supply & feed stores without a
prescription.

Unlike the Heartgard tablets & chewables, Ivomec (and its
generic competitors) doesn't come in premeasured amounts for
canine heartworm prevention, so you need to know how to
deliver approximately the correct amount for each dog.

Ivermectin has an extremely wide safety margin for most dog
breeds, who have been given 30-to-1 (and even higher)
overdoses in controlled studies without showing negative side
effects. Some collies and sighthounds who have two copies
of a certain mutant gene appear to be the dogs most
sensitive to Ivermectin overdose. But so far even they have
shown no negative side effects after an 8-to-1 overdose.

The "Plus" in "Heartgard Plus" refers to a drug called pyrantel,
which is used to prevent roundworms & hookworms. There
are non-prescription drugs (fenbendazole is one) that can kill
roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, & the Taenia species
of tapeworm.
