Post subject: Update: Party favor fish
Archived from groups: rec>aquaria>freshwater>goldfish (more info?)

It has been a week or so since the fish came home.

I haven't had time to do the anal-retentive measuring for ammonia and
nitrites every day so I've hammered the ammonia back with AmQuel and
there should be plenty of salt in there to help with the brown blood.

The media from an existing cycled tank should help accelerate things, but...

Anyhow, I've still got four happy goldfish. They book quite nicely and
appear to like to play in the bubbles.

If I didn't know better I'd say they've grown 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in
the past week. (Impossible, they haven't had that much food, but they
certainly APPEAR bigger.)

Haven't had the heart to ask the party hostess how many have already
died. And no, I haven't spoken to the hostess yet. It will be about time
the tanks cycle that I'll be able to be civil...

Thanks,

-Donald

Update and questions about treatment - You all were right in your suspicions about the nitrates being the problem. I read in a goldfish book that though nitrates are generally not toxic to fish, fancy goldfish, especially Pearlscales, are adversely affected by them, and that high nitrate..

Update on headstanding goldfish - After a 20% water change - I notice fish is alternating between head standing and sitting quietly in a corner. Temp is 80 degrees. Ammonia 0 / nitrite 0/ PH 7.6 What to do ?
