Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents>rats (more info?)

Well, his aka is now, Big Baby as that's what my 11yr. old calls him.
Although he was said not to like children, he sits and bruxes,
fluffing his cheeks for my OS. Perhaps it's just younger kids- the
kind who kept grabbing his babies.

I've been opening the top a few inches and he will come up and sniff
my shirt. The slighest move and he runs for cover, but if I'm still
and soft spoken I can sit there and talk to him while he sniffs my arm
sleeve. When he done with me he tunnels under his eco bedding until I
go away. But he is showing interest! And so far, no biting attempts at
my arm.

Today I gave him the *carrot cake* flavor of the Healthy Desserts I
posted about before (I think). He didn't even TRY to chomp the spoon
once- which is huge deal. He has been chomping only for the first
couple tastes, but today he sat there- on top of his igloo :) and
licked the spoon while I chatted.

A person at Kim's Ark told me he very well might have buggies rather
than a bedding allergy since they are often confused- and I think she
is right on, although I think it may be both.(?) So tomorrow (store's
closed today) I'm going to treat him with Ivermec. I'm so happy about
the treatment method because I ~~really did not want~~ to have to
powder Bed down. He would probably be so traumatized He'd hate me for
life.

As for Small Fry, yesterday noone at the store seemed to know what I
was talking about and neither the manager, nor the clerks I have been
speaking with, were there... so, I'll keep you all posted when I find
out what's going on with him. (He really is so cute and sweet... I
have been *advised* that no matter what I do- DO NOT bring him into my
house with my other rats, not even if it were seperate floors-
although it's not.)

Oh, and- I took a picture of Ben (ONE- he freaked when I snapped the
shot) but I cannot figure out how to decrease size of it so I can post
it. I will put it on a share site if I ccan't figure it out soon. Does
anyone know how to change the file size?

Do you know how old he is?
If he does have buggies, this could be another reason why he bites. Get
him treated asap and then start again with the trust training.

Is it likely to be contagious or maybe it's myco, which all rats have
anyway. I've never really bothered with quarantining, but there seems
to be fewer contagious rat diseases is Australia.

Exactly!

I have not as of yet tried to handle him. I'm letting him settle in a
bit more first. The only sign of *biting* he has exhibited is once
while I was touching his bowl (filling or sometihng) and I rustled the
Eco bedding a little too much- he backed into the corner, puffed a
bit, with mouth agape. But he has been staying out of his igloo longer
to visit me. A bit ago I gave him a piece of baked chicken breast
(first solid treat from my fingers) and he was pretty gentle.

He doesn't seem to mind when I put my hand against him from the other
side of the glass- like when he is lying down against the cage wall. I
have also been giving him the back of my hand to sniff, instead of my
shirt sleeve, and he doesn't seem to mind that either. At least he
doesn't run away. I can tell when he's sick of me because he buries
under his bedding so that I can't see him at all. But he does it very
slow, like "OK- you can go now. I'm done." rather than like when
something spooks him. Which happens too. Progress is progress though,
and every little bit helps. ;)

Joanne, do you breed or show your ratties? I'm just curious.

This is the first time that I have had more than 2 ratties at a time
and I'm curious if you play with them in turns or all at the same
time? How many did you begin with and how long have you been a rattie
mom? If you don't mind me asking.

Trust training takes time and patience and I would say you are going in
the right direction with this little guy. Keep up the good work!

I started off in mid January of 2002 with 2 rats, a week later, I went
and picked up 2 more, a couple of months later, I went and picked up 3
more and so on. I had full intentions of breeding, in my naive days. A
pet store had asked me for babies. Once the first litter was born, I
fell madly in love with them and couldn't sell them to anyone. So my mom
and dad and my sister adopted some rats from me.
It also occurred to me that there are so many rats in shelters or in
classifieds needing homes, that I've decided to only take in those rats.
I'm not a rescue but I only pick up rescues now. It's heartbreaking how
many rats need homes out there. :(
I currently have three groups of rats. The old age rats(4), then I have
my big crew, a mix of all ages, there are 16 of them in one big cage
ranging in age from 7 months to 39 months. Then I have another cage with
6 younger rats.
The four older ones don't get out time, they get lots of cuddle time,
they don't get around as easily anymore. The big crew and smaller one
each have an 1 to 2 hours of out time everyday. I close off my dining
room, where the cages are and I sit down and let them run around. I can
tell you, having 16 rats climb and run all over me is like heaven. :)
Here are a few of my videos:

I've got quite a bit more, you can do a search on YouTube for "jorats".

LOL! Yes, I watched some of your videos...

I had full intentions of adopting only rescue rats after my OS's Dandy
passed away. I had been working with Kim's Ark for some time when I
*accidentally* found Jack & Rocky. Then, as you may have read in my
post, I was going thru the process of getting two spayed girls when I
came across Ben. Hopefully, I can still get the two girls cuz I miss
mine terribly. ;)

The funniest thing is, when I specified what I was looking for in
ratties- I said as long as they don't bite- I'm not picky. The first
time, I wanted babies for my children & I specified that I didn't want
an animal with behavior issues because I didn't have the time to
dedicate. Then as I began spending hours a day with Rocky & Jack, I
realized that I DO have the time... I swear they call out to you or
something.
