Hi, my pet mouse, Giggles, has been sick for about a week now with
sneezing, coughing, and what seems like obvious respiratory distress.
I have decided to put her on Tetracycline first (in the drinking
water) but want to know if anyone has the correct dosage... Sounds
like 1/2 a teaspoon per a 6 oz water bottle would be enough... Can
someone confirm?

The product I have is water soluable tetracycline.

This is urgent, the mouse has not gotten worse and some symptoms are
aided by the VetRX solution (the vapors alleviate some distress), but
I feel like I must start the antibiotics tonight.

Please email me at:

ayarrowsNOSPAM RemoveThis @NOSPAMrcnNOSPAM.com

***remove "NOSPAM" from the above so you're email will go through to
me, please!)***

ALSO, is it a bad idea to start her two cage mates on this as well?
They have probably been exposed already but show zero symptoms (yet).

Thanks,
AndyNYC

My mouse recently had an upper respiratory infection, for which she went to
the vet and was prescribed "Clavimox" but barely got any better over the
course of a week. She was switched to "Baytril" which is a very powerful
antibiotic and left on that for 2 more weeks, and finally that got rid of
it, but she was still showing symptoms up until the very end of the course
of treatment. These infections can be VERY persistent in mice.

Update....

Giggles has seemingly made a full recovery from the respiratory
illness while on Tetracycline since Friday night!! It's Thursday
night, the following week, as I write this.

By Monday she was back to her old self! No sniffles or cough, really,
though initially she improved and still had mild symptoms. Now there
are no symptoms. I plan to keep she and her two cagemates on
Tetracycline for at least another 10 days. Any recommendations on how
long to keep treatment up to ensure the illness is irradicated and
won't return?

One cagemate showed sniffle signs the day I began the treatment, but
two days later these vanished, which is why I think I must treat
everyone (they have all been exposed to Giggles who showed symptoms
very suddenly, at which point separation probably would not have
helped).

I use a bit less than 1/2 teaspoon of tetracyclene per water bottle,
with a little salt and sugar mixed in to help cut some of the bitter
flavor. The water is changed daily (new mixture each night). I also
mixed some of the powder into baby food which the three mice ravaged
the second I put it down into the cage (probably a better way to
administer the meds than water, although they are freely drinking the
water). I have only done the baby food mixture once, initially because
I feared Giggles was worsening and not willing to drink the bitter
water with the antibiotics in it. Luckily, with no other water source,
they learned to love it.

Anyway, any thoughts on how long to keep up treatment would be much
appreciated!

It can return at any time, respiratory illness in rodents is well
doccumented and has a nasty habit of returning time and again.

If it's respiratory illness, it's not usually contagious, however I am not a
vet and don't know Giggles' symptoms - just be sure you don't keep them on
wood shavings as these are known to aggravate, if not actually cause this
type of illness...some types aren't as bad as others, pine being the worst
culprit.

As I said earlier, I'm not a vet, but if you continue for 10 day after it's
cleared up, you'll not be far out, but don't be at all surprised to see it
return - at least you know what to do if and when it does, which I hope it
never does (-:

I only use CareFresh and change the bedding about every 10 days.

I read on various on-line resources about treating mice and rats that
these bitter antibiotic water mixtures are best aided, on a taste
level, with salt, not sugar. The salt helps lessen the bitterness, I
believe, and also could stimulate a desire to drink. I am careful to
add just a tiny amount so they aren't drinking salt water, but I think
the salt and sugar combo have really made the mixture palatable.

Yeah, I have heard about it returning. I'm thinking I'll go 21 days on
Tetracycline and see what happens by monitoring things closely. But
right now I am very happy see Giggles healthy again. She is easily the
friendliest mouse I have ever had and loves getting attention, so I
hated to see her suffering. Keep your fingers crossed that this
illness is defeated!!!
