Ok...I have some Australian Rainbows that I think have fungus. One
has some fuzz on the nose. Today some fell off, but looks like some
flesh flapping around. Another has a small dot on the side fin. It's
bigger than ich, and maybe a little fuzzy. Not so sure. I would not
doubt it since I just got the fish and they went through
transportation and may have been wounded in the process.

Question, what are some proven methods to cure without thrashing my
biological filter?

* will salt cure fungus?
* I heard malachite green is good. But can you still buy it anywhere?
ie petco/petsmart Does it work?
* I heard mecurochrome on the fungus works, anyone try it and can
really say it works?
* general fungus meds at the store?

Thanks!!

I agree!
Check your water parameters as this is often a problem area when true
fungus problems occur (or many opportunistic bacteria as well).

Make sure your levels are:
*Ammonia 0
*nitrites 0
*Nitrates under 50
*pH; not a set pH but rather a stable pH
*KH at least 50 ppm to promote pH stability
*GH; 100 or more which is necessary electrolytes such as clacium which
is important for healing and disease prevention

As far as possible treatments, I find a 30minute bath in Methylene
Blue using tank water and a double normal strength dose of methylene
blue

A few in tank treatments that are effective (assuming water conditions
are good or brought under control) include:
*Pimafix
*Triple sulfa
*Acriflavin/malchite Green
*Medicated Wonder Shells.

This article discusses many aquarium treatments available;

First check, if it really is fungus or if it is mouth-fungus
(cotton-wool-disease, columnaris). Some pictures may help:

Good water conditions are the key. Make a lot of water changes.

Good water hygiene.
Temperatur more than 26 - 27° C slows down the growth of fungus.

> * will salt cure fungus?

Salt can help to treat lightly affected fish.

> * I heard malachite green is good. But can you still buy it anywhere?

Malachite green is in almost every medicament against ichthyo. It can
affect your filter bacteria, but normally they will recover quickly.

> ie petco/petsmart

Don't know. I'm from Germany. But every pet store should have one or more
medicaments against fungus.

> Does it work?

Yes. But you have to eliminate the underlying causal factors. Wounds, water
hygiene etc.

> * I heard mecurochrome on the fungus works, anyone try it and can

It doesn't help against fungus, but it helps against open wounds. You have
to paint it onto the wounds. That's not easy.
