Post subject: Tokays and vine snakes... advice please
Archived from groups: alt>pets>reptiles>snakes (more info?)

Hi y'all!

I'm relatively new to this group, but I would appreciate any advice on
a particular 'situation' I've got. I'm currently living in the
Philippines and this morning my gardener turned up with two remarkable
animals. A tokay gecko and a vine snake. He caught them near his house
(which isn't exactly ideal herpetofauna environment) and refuses to let
me release them in my garden. To be honest, I've always wanted a Tockay
and my Bio teacher will love the vine snake (I'm pretty confident it's
Ahaetulla - perfect body shape, horizontal pupil and line to camouflage
pupil).

Now I've kept my fair share of exotics. Just take a look at my blog -
petmanic[dot]blogspot[dot]com. Including my fair share of animals that
could give you a fairly vicious bite (not yet on the blog). However,
this is my first tockay or any large lizard for that matter.

Any advice? How far can they 'launch' themselves if they intend to take
a finger off? How quick a turn of speed can they get: skink quick or
wolf snake quick? If my experience with exotics has thought me anything
it's unquestionably that I should not underestimate them. What would be
an underestimate with Tokays - especially a 20cm tockay with jaw
muscles the size of my thumb?

If any of you have any specific details about vine snakes as well I
would appreciate them, but I am somewhat more comfortable with snakes.

Thanks,
Gabe
