I read a story once about a dog dying from drinking too much saltwater
on a family trip to the ocean. Of course, the story might not have
been true, but I don't see why it couldn't have been. So, I guess the
question is... for those of you who take your dogs to the ocean, how do
you keep them from drinking the salt water? I *know* my dog would
attempt to drink it, but do they normally stop after they taste how
salty it is?

My first dog drank enough to make himself vomit. But suffered no ill
effects at all. All dogs since then enjoy a splash and a swim, but I
have never noticed them drinking it in any quantity. Take your dog -
have fun - they love it :-))

My first dog grew up on the ocean and never attempted to drink
it. When I moved to the prairies and her daily swimming changed
to rivers, it took me over a year to convince her that the new
swimming water was OK to drink.

Vice versa: my second dog grew up swimming in, and drinking
from, rivers. When I took him on a trip to the ocean, he
immediately jumped in to swim, took one slurp, and then never
took another.
