World-wide:
1. Africa--being poached to the eventual end for
ivory, exotic pets, food.
2. China, plus most of Asia--consuming/murdering and torturing animals
for
food, faux-medicinal products, fur-trade et al.
3. Thailand and Ceylon---esp. cruel to elephants--labor and sport
4. India---exploding population equals slow and insidious end to
animal life--
--cows are still ok, we assume.
5. Antarctica---less ice mass means more slow death for polar bears,
seals, and penguins.
6. Whaling is worse than ever, mostly by Japan, Norway and Canada but
they
are not alone.
7. South America--say goodbye to the 'Rain Forest'--real soon.
---------------------
The U.S.:
1. VIVISECTION is bigger than ever, (esp. in the DOD),
more chimps, cats and dogs, etc. Viv. is a huge growth industry
providing many jobs from Frankenstein to clean-up person.
And most other developed counties are just as guilty.
2. Exotic Pet Trade is thriving here--there are more birds in cages
than can be counted by an ordinary calculator. Ditto for snakes and
hundreds of others.
3. Breeeding Industry is gigantic:
a. Puppy Mills
b. Cat Mills
c. Toygers
d. Ligers
many, many more
4. Factory Fur-farming is bigger than ever
because Real Fur is back with a vengeance.
5. Factory-Farming of food animals has reached cruelty
levels unheard of not long ago.
a. Ostrich
b. Lhama
c. Alligator
d. This list is pretty much without end.
6. Habitat encroachment is a world-wide problem but is also very bad
here for thousands of species.
7. Circus animals still live the Hell on Earth.
8. Shelters house those who suffer the terror of life in a tiny cage--
--we are still just kidding when it comes to dog and cat
overpopulation.
Please add to this off-the-cuff list because it's anything but
complete. >> Stay informed about: Things are worse than ever--a mini-briefing |

Most unthinking people don't realise that if the Arctic ice pack were
to melt it would cause no change in mean sea-level because the
floating ice displaces its own mass of water not its volume. >> Stay informed about: Things are worse than ever--a mini-briefing |

It's true that the ice that's over the pole itself wouldn't cause the
water level to rise but not all of the Arctic ice is over water. Much of
it is over land in Greenland, Canada, Alaska and Russia. And if that
melts, that WILL cause a rise in ocean level, just as if the Antarctic
ice was to melt. >> Stay informed about: Things are worse than ever--a mini-briefing |

Oh, I think that animals, unlike some humans, are smart enough
to get the hell out of a bad situation. Anyway, polar bears
are just a variety of grizzly that evolved special adaptations
to arctic conditions. No doubt they would revert and return to
eating elk and caribou instead of seals. >> Stay informed about: Things are worse than ever--a mini-briefing |

The Greenland ice _is_ melting, and at a rate that is raising
the ocean levels about 3mm/yr. At that rate it will be almost
a foot in the next 100 years. Of course, Greenland is shaped
like a dish in the interior, and it is not certain that _all_
of the water will end up in the oceans. (20 feet predicted) >> Stay informed about: Things are worse than ever--a mini-briefing |

Yeah, like the dinosaurs, the dodo's, the carrier pigeons, the american
camel, mammoths, mastodons, giant beavers, sabertooth cats, woolly
rhino. Oh, wait, all of those are DEAD. GONE. EXTINCT! Strange that they
weren't "smart enough to get the hell out of a bad situation."

They probably adapted over thousands, if not tens of thousands, of
years. They can't revert in just a couple of hundred (if they have that
long.)

Why not? It's not as if they have to evolve new anatomical
structure to change their diet. Animals change their behavior
very quickly to exploit new food sources. Polar bears are
excellent predators.

I.e. catastrophes can happen. And global warming and ice caps melting in
a matter of a couple of centuries IS a catastrophe in evolutionary terms.
>
>> the dodo's,

If they were so poorly adapted, they wouldn't have evolved to begin
with. EVERY species is adapted to its current environment. It's when
that environment changes suddenly that they can't change with it.

Those aren't the american camel. THAT particular animal is gone.
History. Kaput. They didn't survive. They didn't "get the hell out of a

Polar bears are adapted to the cold weather. They'd die of heat if the
temps went up enough for the ice to have melted. It's not just a matter
of what they eat.
They are also adapted to stealth hunting and sitting at an ice hole
waiting for their prey or digging into a seal den. They are not adapted
to running down their prey as grizzlies are.
