Post subject: A Telepathic Sharpei???
Archived from groups: alt>pets>dogs>sharpei (more info?)

My Sharpei has Pretzel Legs problems and broke a knee ligament. I took
him to a Vet who said he'd perform the surgery for less than anybody else.
While in hindsight, this wasn't the best idea, but since we're only
students, it's all we could afford. Anyway, when we dropped him off the Vet
told us that we weren't allowed in the back "surgical" area. I assumed that
he was concerned about the cleanliness of the place, and let the Vet take
him into the back.
While everybody dreams, I, like a lot of others, don't generally remember
my dreams. But, that night I remembered it, when out of nowhere my dog,
Wishbone, suddenly appeared. I recall saying stupidly, "Wishbone, what are
you doing in my dream." I don't remember all the details, but he made it
clear that he was in some distress and wanted me to come get him.
This was highly unusual and I told my wife and we decided we had better
go to the Vet's office first thing and make sure that everything was
alright. It was a two minute drive to the office so I drove it early in
order to be there when the Vet showed up. However when I got there, to my
surprise, bloody, scratched and waiting in the front lobby was Wishbone.
Somehow he had broken out of his crate, squeezed through the small message
door into the lobby and his escape had been stopped only by the plate glass
window.
He looked such a mess that when the Vet arrived he offers to put him "to
sleep;" I look at him as if he had two heads. "Not on your life." I recall
saying...and I meant it.
Now, I'd like to know, if anyone else has had any similar experience with
Sharpeis. Please write or post.
Thanks, Al

my sharpei had the knee issues and it cost me $1200 a kneee to fix.

The problems that occur is due to a bad breeder. They over breed their litter too much and that cuased the weakness in the joints.

Are you experiencing any other problems yet with your sharpei?

Genetic problems don't come from frequent breeding, they come from
indiscriminate breeding. While there is never a guarantee that puppies will
be healthy and free of congenital (genetic) defects, one can minimize the
possibilities. In the case of joint problems, the breeder should obtain OFA
certifications for hips and knees. The lineage of both parents should be
examined for a spectrum of health issues. It is safe to say that "bad
breeders" are unlikely to pay for certifications or do any research. It is
also safe to say that only someone with poor ethics (and an uncertified dog)
would provide stud service to an uncertified bitch. Frequent breeding can
cause health problems for the bitch, but it won't alter her genetics or
increase the probability that she will pass on genetic deformities.

Considering the number of dogs in rescue, not to mention the hundreds of
thousands that are euthanized each year, the best way to avoid perpetuating
these problems is to adopt a dog from rescue unless you intend to dedicate
yourself to the improvement of the breed. It is the willingness of people
to buy from indiscriminate breeders that encourages the production of
genetically unsound dogs.

Luxating patella CAN be caused by injury but I highly doubt that over
breeding a dog could cause this. What can cause it is an injury during
running (same as with humans. I've had both of my knees done due to
falls which twisted the knee). Running and slipping and falling, or
running and twisting to turn can also cause this.

But in most cases, it's genetic and can be prevented through diligant
screening of breeding animals through x-raying and OFA certifying.

While it does happen in our breed, it is NOT breed specific, nor is it
what I would call "common". It happens, but can also happen in other
breeds AND in humans. It's akin to tearing the ACL in humans. My
daughter did this and had to have ACL surgery to repair it. She did it
skiing.
