Genetic problems don't come from frequent breeding, they come from
indiscriminate breeding. While there is never a guarantee that puppies will
be healthy and free of congenital (genetic) defects, one can minimize the
possibilities. In the case of joint problems, the breeder should obtain OFA
certifications for hips and knees. The lineage of both parents should be
examined for a spectrum of health issues. It is safe to say that "bad
breeders" are unlikely to pay for certifications or do any research. It is
also safe to say that only someone with poor ethics (and an uncertified dog)
would provide stud service to an uncertified bitch. Frequent breeding can
cause health problems for the bitch, but it won't alter her genetics or
increase the probability that she will pass on genetic deformities.
Considering the number of dogs in rescue, not to mention the hundreds of
thousands that are euthanized each year, the best way to avoid perpetuating
these problems is to adopt a dog from rescue unless you intend to dedicate
yourself to the improvement of the breed. It is the willingness of people
to buy from indiscriminate breeders that encourages the production of
genetically unsound dogs.
