It's possible that the tarantula is trying to create a humidity chamber,
and moving the substrate in and out is its way of adjusting the
humidity as needed.

NI>Hi,
NI>When my Tarantula (Adult Chaco) is getting close to shedding, it will
NI>start to gather up/move around the substrate, eventually blocking up
NI>his tunnel, leaving a small hole, which then gets blocked with web.
NI>Since I've had this spider, it has shedded three times, each time
NI>blocking up it's tunnel/hide with substrate and web shortly before.
NI>Recently, I have noticed the tarantula has been moving the substrate
NI>around again, but this time for no apparent reason. He will gather up
NI>the soil from inside his tunnel, and then drop piles of it outside the
NI>hide. A few minutes later, he will pick up this substrate (which has
NI>just been dropped outside the hide), then take it back inside the
NI>tunnel again. Also, when he is moving about the tank, I have seen him
NI>collect up soil and move it to another part of the tank.
NI>Is my tarantula confused?
NI>Nick.
