A friend's budgie imitates the telephone ring. Which tells me the bird
doesn't have to have a human presence in order to imitate sound. Could I put
a phrase "Pretty boy" as an example on a repeating tape and leave it on for
a baby budgie to hear while I am at work? (It would go for an hour at most-
I am not into animal cruelty). Has someone else tried this?

No. In the history of bird keeping since humans have been able to
record sound, you are the first person to ever think of this.
