With a few more days before our next vet check on Marcie's tail, I am
incredibly pleased with the healing. I took a bold step today and
washed the area with a wet washcloth and I'm pretty confident that
Tuesday's appointment will give the thumbs up to stop bandaging.

Marcie's tail first bled on April 2nd, so this has been a long healing
process! I thank everyone who sent me links and advise on tail healing
and I used all of it to come up with what would work for us.

I think I'm going to type up a little "bandaging 101" for my vet, and
anyone else who may need it. The combo we wound up using held up really
well, protected her tail, and promoted healing. Most importantly
though, it was simple to do once the pattern was set, and it had low
impact on the dog(s), which was crucial.

I'd like to see a copy of your tail wrapping protocol when it becomes
available.

I definitely think that you should put that up on your
website, so that people who are searching for that kind of
information online can find it.

Marcie sure has made the case for those with breeds who traditionally dock
tails because their tails are subject to happy tail injuries!

Will do, as soon as I finalize it. It has definitely been a new skill
to learn!

I did forget - Use "magic eraser" to remove blood spatters from all over
the house.

I always figured that only "naked" tails were at risk! Hairy tails are
obviously not immune.

It is interesting though. Look at how many skinny, naked tails DON'T
get docked. Tails very similar to those seen on traditionally docked
breeds. Do they really have more tail injuries than hairy tailed dogs?
What about dogs who do have hair tails and have them docked? Like
Aussies (which may be a natural bob, may be a partial or full tail)?
Apparently they work stock differently than BC's, but since the vast
majority never see sheep (or once in a rare blue moon), does it really
make sense to dock?

I don't have very strong feelings about docking one way or another. I
do love my breeds' feathered tails though and really hated the thought
of Marcie possibly losing her tail to this. In such a very waggy
breed, their tails are only secondary to their tongues as a strong
character trait!

I always thought the same.

Greyhounds for example. Low fat, bony tails. Maybe they don't wag them
much?

I love my breeds tail as well. But they are thick/meaty tails, heavily
haired, and tightly curled, seldom subject to injury (never wiping off
coffee tables) and always wriggling tidily as a barometer. No shin damage
to me either! I think tailed breed afficianos do have a certain attachment
to their breeds tails. But if tail injuries were common to a breed, i
would think I'd readily dock rather than go through what you just did.

I can't imagine a lab without a tail, yet rotties dock. I would think their
tails similar to a labs.
Perhaps the shin damage to owners might be a consideration to rotties?

And the there are the docked breeds.. I wonder if having a tail would
enhance or detract from Harriet's "kidney bean" dance?

I wonder if Shelly would accept a boxer in the future, whose tail was not
docked. I saw a boxer today whose ears were natural, but his tail was
docked.. He was a very fine boxer. I think he might have looked funny with
a natural tail

I prefer the look of dobies docked and cropped

OMG yes, I'm cleaning vinyl straps of a chaise lounge. No soap or
cleaner needed and no scrubbing. Soot comes off walls and brick, dirt
from around switchplates and along doorways where dogs scrape by all of
the time, etc. Not having to use cleaner (that then may have to be
rinsed, leave residue, etc) is great. They do disintegrate, but I buy
Target brand ones in 4 packs.

I'll be darned. I have a lot of greezy spots where the dogs
rub when going through doors and around corners, etc. and
those just don't clean up that well with the usual
cleaners. One thing that's no longer an issue for my guys
but will be for Marcie is that when they go into heat, even
though you can be pretty careful there's almost inevitably a
spot here or there that needs to be cleaned up.

They work GREAT on that. We have a fair amount as well. The magic
eraser takes it off matte or gloss surfaces really easily.

I'm sure. My blood experience assures me that it will be a snap. I'm
still dreading it though. I figure it will probably be somewhere in the
Thanksgiving to Christmas time frame.
