Hello,

Thanks all for help with woodpecker problem. (yesterdays post)

The Suet feeders sounds like a real good idea.

Hopefully, they will like this better than the wood siding, and the few ants
that might be beneath the wood.

I believe there are zillions of different kinds of Suet.

Anyone happen to know which type woodpeckers like, and which they don't ?

Thanks,
Bob (outside of Boston)

First thing I would recommend for this time of year is a 'year-round' suet
...... they don't melt and make a mess. Woodpeckers like anything with seeds
and fruit in it and don't forget peanut butter. I've never tried the ones
that have bugs in them. I buy the square suet cakes and feed them out of
the basic 6" square suet cage. I get hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers,
black capped chickadees and red breasted nuthatches at them.

You may still want to take a close look at your siding just to be sure there
isn't something hiding in there doing major damage.

Good luck!

These are ones my woodpeckers (Gilas, and gilded and red shafted flickers)
seem to PARTICULARLY like (but they seem to love ANY suet) in more or less
this order... I've tried ALL the suet in the Suet Plus series, and the
woodpeckers seemed to be happy with all of them...

Howard's woodpeckers (I think he just has Gilas, though there could be
others) seem to be a bit more discriminating, and prefer C&S Peanut Delight,
or similar...

Your mileage may differ... Howard and I live in the low desert of
Arizona... Howard lives in Tucson, and I live near Phoenix, so your
woodpeckers COULD have slightly different tastes... I'll STILL bet any of
the suets above will be popular with your woodpecker(s)...

Good luck...

I buy my suet at Loews for a dollar a pat. They have some for half again
more, but my woodpeckers (and the grackles and the blue jays and ...)
don't care. It's solid at least to 97F.
