I had two ferrets a couple years ago for a couple years, and got two
new ones a year ago - one male and one female. I love them heaps!
However, they very suddenly smell VERY strongly after having almost no
scent at all the whole time I've had them. Can anyone shed any light
on why they would suddenly start smelling soooo strongly???
Thanks!

They have been neutered.
I'm pretty sure they've finished shedding.
I haven't bathed them recently.
I don't think they've had a fright.
Their diet hasn't changed.
They've been stinky now for about 10days. Tho not as bad as it was 10
days ago! >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |

They all get a bit strong now and then. There are ferret shampoos and even
ferret cream rinses. You don't want to do that very often though. I just take
a damp washcloth and wipe my ferrets down a bit....maybe once a month or so, no
more....it's just a minor "spongebath."
They seem to like that too....not while I'm doing it, but afterwards when it's
all over. Also be sure to wash bedding on a regular basis...they like the
clean smell of bedding too. >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |

You should bathe them at least monthly. All ferrets have an odor in their
urine that inevitably gets on their coats. Also, most of them are
constantly crawling in behind furniture and picking all sorts of dirty
little tidbits, dust and cobwebs. At first, our ferret hated the bathing,
esp when I used my shampoo on him. Now he actually likes it since it
triggers intense playtimes.
If you can't find ferret shampoo, use Johnson's baby shampoo. The drill is,
run your bathtub faucet with the water a bit warmer than lukewarm, maybe 110
degree F. Then put a big bowl in the tub and fill it with the warm water.
Leave the water running. Next dip the ferret in the bowl up to his neck,
let him get completely soaked. Next squirt shampoo on him front and back,
up and down. Work it up into a suds and rub it all over him, esp around his
tail. Next, dip him back into the bowl, followed by putting under the
running water. Rinse him thoroughly, then wrap him in a clean warm towel
and rub off as much water as you can. Then let him loose and watch how he
goes nuts, running around the house until he tires.
He'll act like he's mad at you, but not for long, as soon as he figures out
how clean he is. Naturally, at first he will squirm and try his best to
escape what must seem like an attempted drowning. Just use both hands and
hold tight. Good luck - CW

If its not a matter of diet changing and you haven't bathed them in a while,
I would think that was the problem. You also need to clean the cage really
well and wash the bedding. There are all sorts of products out there to make
your ferrets smell good. I bought a spritz that is baby fresh and they
smell fantastic all the time. You spray it on in between baths. There are
also towelettes that are baby fresh that you can use to wipe them down in
between baths. Once a month, if that often, they get a bath. Everyday the
cage is cleaned out but only once a week the blankets get washed and the
cage gets a total cleaning. There are some good products out there for
cleaning the cage and the litter so it doesn't let the smell get built up..
which it will. You have to be careful of what you do use on them and the
cage so it doesn't harm the ferrets. Some products will leave a residue
behind that can be harmful to the kids. Good luck!

Hm...I think the washing bedding and cage route may be the way to go.
I usually give my ferrets a dry shampoo using a powder I got at the
pet store once a month, and give them a real bath maybe once every
three or so (which they put up with, but don't like much). I also use
BiOdor to get rid of smell, which up til now has worked fabulously.
I'll give the bedding/cage a good scrub, and we'll see if that helps.
Perhaps they're just marinating overmuch in their own juices in bed,
and it reached critical saturation a couple weeks ago :)

I also use Bi-Odor and I put it on their food. My female ferret won't even eat
unless it has that on it. The male doesn't care.
Again.....washing the bedding helps. Even the ferrets love the fresh smell.
And at least just a sponge bath once in awhile helps too. >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |

I would think that the bedding and cage needs to be cleaned. A lot of times
people think the ferret stinks when it's really the bedding. We change ours
every week.
Don't you like to change the sheets on your bed?
For washing the bedding we add a cup of ammonia to cut the oil and
deodorize.

My washer/dryer are finally back on line; I will try out washing the
bedding super well (with ammonia!). Ferrets aren't NEARLY as bad as
last week, but still it's noticeable whereas it wasn't before.
For the record, I power clean the cage about once a month (spray it
out, then let it sit full of water and some bleach for a while). >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |

I have read that you should only bathe them a couple times a year, not
monthly.

Not sure what the conventional wisdom is, but I generally bathe our Bacchus
when his fur is noticeably dirty, which turns out to be about once a
month. - CW >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |

Aha. Now I know why. I ran out of distilled water, and gave my
ferrets regular tap water for the first time ever. Here in Phoenix,
the tap water is unbelievably hard. Once that had run out and I
replaced it with distilled again, their litter box stopped smelling so
incredibly bad. >> Stay informed about: Suddenly stinky! |
