Stanpipe or overflox boxes?

Building a new home and I will have a 6 foot long tank in it. Probably a
125G but might go with the a 150G. The tank will sit with one short end on
the wall. Leaving both long sides and one short side open. I have imagined
this for a long time but it's time to stop daydreaming and start doing some
serious planning.

Oceanic offers their Reef Ready tanks with one corner box installed. I could
live with that because the corner with the box would be against the wall and
for the most part out of sight.. However just the tank is $1,000 . An
AllGlass tank is half that and they will drill it for me.

I am considering a standpipe in the tank. I could easily hide it with
plants.Or cover the pipe with some silicone and then add sand and rock to
disguise it. Since it is in front of my Bedroom door I am concerned about
the noise of a stand pipe. Also a bit concerned about the possible leaks
with the bulkhead and chance, though slim, of the glass cracking where it is
drilled.

Another other option is since I am building the stand and hood, is to use
overflow box(es) on the side and just make the stand 6" longer than the
tank. I could build it so that the side was enclosed to hide the plumbing
and boxes. Even put doors there for access.

I guess what I am looking for is some discussion on how to do this.
Experience with stand pipes would be good. I have one set up with an
overflow box and other than the ugly box in the tank it has worked
perfectly.

I like the stand pipes. It keeps everything hidden. What I might
suggest is that you contact both Oceanic and All Glass ( they are actually
owned by the same company) and see if they would build two over flows and
returns on the short end of the tanks. You might be surprise and find that
it is not that much more expensive.

Oceanic tanks are much better constructed, or at least appear to be.
Compare them side by side and you will see what I mean. Give some
consideration to a tank that is wider from front to back, look at the 140G
and 180G and 220G. Just an opinion.

As far as noise, yes standpipes can be a little loud. There are
modifications that can greatly reduce the noise to a small whisper. Do a
search for the Durso modification (never mind, her it is www.rl180reef.com )
