If your squirrel feeder is sturdy, a squirrel is not going to damage it
simply by hanging on it. They might damage it by chewing on it to get at
the seed if it is made of plastic or vinyl. I did not pay as much for mine
as the prices that are shown. I watched for sales and got one that way, and
I was able to order the other one from eBay -- Duncraft actually has an
"overstock" site on eBay. Here are some examples:
http://tinyurl.com/34z6sf
(I also have the Pavilion feeder. It works well as long as you remember to
use only a small amount of seed and lift the grid so the seed is underneath.
However, the squirrels *will* sit on the grids and *try* to get at the
seed.)

Sorry...I was thinking more of some previous messages where people did
seriously recommend that we shoot the squirrels. My sister has a neighbor
who traps them and hauls them away. Fortunately, he uses Hav-a-Hart traps,
but it has done him no good at all -- squirrels just seem to move in and
fill the available space.

Exactly! That was my point -- it's all part of nature. (Except:
Armadillos do *terrible* damage here. They're part of nature, too, but I
can't look on them as benignly as I do with squirrels.)

That seems somewhat strange to me. I have trapped as many as 8 red
squirrels in the space of a couple of weeks and have not had any return
for at least 5 months. I have only seen one around my feeders so far
this year and it is going to take a trip shortly. :)

I don't think the originals return. I think other squirrels move in. At
least, we did not see any reduction in the squirrel population despite his
numerous "transports," and I read somewhere that squirrels do tend to fill a
space with the number that will be supported. Actually, my sister and I
were pleased with his lack of success -- we enjoy the squirrels, and he had
moved into a neighborhood with lots of trees and lots of squirrels
(including some beautiful black squirrels -- she lives in northeast Ohio).

Trapping and removing squirrels makes room for others to move in and
replace them. The appropriate question is not whether specific little
darlings return, but whether the number in the neighborhood is reduced.

We have much the same problem here, with white wing doves (but, thankfully,
NOT with squirrels)... We don't want to feed or encourage the white wings,
but they are determined to eat, and, worse, they'll literally fly at, and
land on top of, other birds that land on the feeders, scaring them away,
even from feeders where the white wings can't get at food themselves, or
where they find it very difficult to get food... They still try to keep
that food for themselves... They're apparently MUCH smarter than their
dumber-than-stumps mourning dove cousins, and keep finding ways to defeat
weight-activated species-specific feeders, even when I modify the feeders to
prevent repetition of some of their tactics...
Once upon a time, I even bought an airsoft bb gun that shoots small hollow
plastic bb's. The idea being to just pester them, rather than hurt them...
Problem was, they were so determined to get at the food, that, after the
first few times, you could shoot them each fifty times and not phase them...
I finally gave THAT up, and just removed the suet feeders, and more or less
resigned myself to losing a certain percentage of the seed to them during
the +/- six months they're here... Thank God we're about halfway through
another year of those white-winged locusts... At least the OTHER half of
the year is much less trying...
