How about a .50 caliber BMG sniper rifle???

Should take care of your pesky squirrels from almost ANY distance...

Incidentally, how far away are your nearest neighbors... At least three
miles away, I hope...

Deep breaths, Donna, deep breaths!!

I had to tell my elderly neighbour that if she's going to feed the birds,
she's going to feed chipmunks and squirrels too. One just goes hand in hand
with the other.

Have you tried putting something out just for the squirrels in another part
of your yard? I have no idea if that helps or not (I've never tried it) but
I've heard it suggested many times. There are squirrel feeders that you
just fill with peanuts and hang AWAY from where you regularly feed the
birds. Could you try something like that?

They do worse than that. I have been taking pictures at a flycatcher's
nest. Last evening my wife spotted a red squirrel leaving the nest box
with a baby bird. We chased it up a tree. She watched the squirrel
start to eat the baby (alive) while I ran to the house for the .410.

The fall out of the tree apparently killed the squirrel. Unfortunately
we couldn't find the baby bird. I looked in the nest box and there
were only two left.

This is the second time I have actually witnessed a red squirrel with
a live baby bird. The first was many years ago. Unfortunately that
instance was on company property where a gun discharge would result in
immediate dismissal.

Well Tammie I really don't want to feed those pest. I've done everything I
can to get rid of them. I even bought a BB gun and that doesn't even phase
them, they just sit there and continue to eat.
But I guess I'm going to have to feed them as much as I hate to. I didn't
want to spend any money on the squirrels.
Thanks!

We used to have lots of Douglas squirrels stealing bird seed from my
feeders, but over the last year, the coyotes have become more abundant, and
I haven't seen a squirrel for 2 weeks or more (at least around here, I did
see one down the street). Also, there aren't any mice or rats trying to
sneak in my garage, and I've noticed digging in the mole hills that
sometimes appear in my area (and frankly, a lot less mole activity-meaning,
hopefully, less moles!). Of course, it's not all good news:

This is just part of nature. As Tammie said, if you feed birds you will
also feed squirrels. If you relax and watch them, you may learn to enjoy
their antics. Moreover, it really does no good to shoot them (as someone
else suggested) because others will just move in an take their place.
Squirrels seem to expand to the number that can be supported by the
particular environment.

Now, what type of squirrel proof feeders are you using? I have had good
success with mine. Yes, squirrels will hang from them and scrape seed from
the base. They also eat seed that is knocked to the ground by birds. But
they cannot get into the main source of the seed -- and that's what I want
to avoid because they really are little gluttons, and I can't afford to buy
as much seed as they could consume. Here are two feeders that have worked
well for me (but do not *eliminate* squirrels, as I explained):
http://www.duncraft.com/Heritage-Farms-Absolute-II-Squirrel-Proof-Feed...P383C0.
http://www.duncraft.com/Metal-Safe-Haven-P236C91.aspx
If you get the "haven," be sure to get the one I listed. There is a similar
one where the cage is not as large in diameter. That one will not work
because the squirrels can reach the seed. The cage on the one I use is
large enough that they can hang from it and scoop left-over food from the
base, but they cannot reach the seed ports where the primary food supply is
stored. (Note that these are really "squirrel resistant" rather than
"squirrel proof"

Hi Tammie - I bought mine at Wild Birds Unlimited and is similar to your
"haven". I thought mine cost a lot. I cannot afford one like you have. I
have 2, one is like the raven and one the cage is closer. I don't know if
they can get to the food or not. I don't mind if they eat the food that has
fallen on the ground, it's when they get on the feeder and wrap their legs
around the feeder. I'm afraid that they're going to break it.
I have sat on my screened in porch and tried to enjoy them, but it hasn't
worked so far. LOL
I think I've decided to feed the squirrels as much as I hate to spend a
dollar on the little varmits.
Thanks Tammie!

Oh how sad...the coyote eating the cat! I haven't noticed any less mole
activity. I have as much or more than last year.
Thanks for the story.

I did say that, but I was just kidding, as the suggestion of using a 50
caliber sniper rifle, which is capable of stopping a BUS, was meant to
convey...

I suppose I could have used a *smiley* emoticon, but I thought it was tongue
in cheek enough the way it was...

Ahhh, well...
