I've just bought a corn snake. The instructions that came with the
vivarium regarding seting the temperatures says:

Setting Heat Mat (Night Time) Temperature
Important: always set temperature with spot bulb off.
Turn on heat mat and set thermostat on full (red light on).
When thermometer reaches temperature of between 83'F and 87'F turn
thermostat down just enough for the red light to go off. This should now
maintain correct temperature.

Setting Air (Day Time) Temperature.
Set air temperature with spot bulb on and thermometer on back wall. An
air temperature of between 82'F and 84'F needs to be achieved. If the
air temperature exceeds this then a lower wattage bulb is needed. If the
air temperature is below this then a higher wattage bulb is required.

Does all this make sense and sound right?

Also, I've put the spot bulb on a timer to come on at 8am and go off at
8pm - is 12 hours too long?

Thanks for your help!

I think 12 hours is fine in the summer - I reduce my animals 1 hour at a
time in the fall until they get down to about 8 hours.

I think the temps sound fine, assuming you have a basking spot that is
hotter than the rest of the air temp in the daytime.

Ok cheers ;)

Yeah spot light area is hotter however, my snake tends to spend the
whole time in his hide on the cool side :(

Does he have a hide on the warm side of the tank? *All* my snakes prefer
their moist hide on the warm side of the tank, I use plastic containers with
some moist sphagnum moss inside and they love to rest there.

If you've lots of hides and that's not the problem... maybe the hot side is
TOO hot. Can you stand to lay your palm flat on the hottest basking spot in
the hottest part of the day? If it's not too hot for your hand (assuming
you're not some calloused pipefitter or something) then its probably OK for
your snake. Best to get one more thermometer and test the hottest spot! :)

Yeah he does, but I rarely see him use it! Doesn't mean he isn't I
guess.

I'll have to give this a try. Theres two hides, one on the hot and one
on the cold. He also manages to hide under the water bowl, so that makes
another hide on the cool side! Then theres the base of the climb which
is on the hot side which he hides under to shelter from the bulb I guess.

It would actually be for the cold side - I already have a thermometer on
the hot side which in the daytime reads in the mid 80's.

I accidently picked up a humidity meter instead of a thermometer! They
both looked the same lol :) Anyway, thats reading between 60 and 70%
humidity - don't know what that means or if its good or bad!

Thanks for your help ;)

Wish I could tell you how to get it that way all the time, but to be
honest - I have no idea! All I know is I've got the heat mat and the
spot bulb at one end, and a large water bowl at the other.

Well mine used to spend all its time in the cool end in the hide, but now
its managed to wriggle its way under the water bowl! It now hides there!
