Greetings;
Hamsters already have a fair bit of intelligence. Once, just for fun, I
poked a pen through the spokes of CBGB's wheel. Instead of looking
puzzled, she hopped out and went to the front of the wheel to see what was
blocking it. That showed me that she thought of her wheel as something
which moved forward rather than being a stationary object with a pen stuck
in it. She was able to reason that something must have gotten in front of
the wheel.
When I had 2 hamsters, I sat on one side of the cage and scratched the other
side of it. Instead of looking toward the noise, both of them looked at me
as if to say, "Knock it off human. We know it's just you." Animals can
figure things out if it's to their advantage.
One thing I liked to do was to provide my hamsters with toilet paper roll
tubes. They loved running through them, nibbling on them, and even dozing
off inside the tubes. Those were great hamster toys and didn't cost me any
extra. They enjoyed exploring the bath tub too. I would change the cage
while they explored and leave toilet paper tubes in there for them to play
with. They knew that I would give them a treat if they returned to the
newly-cleaned cage. Too bad I didn't have a video camera or even a Super 8
movie camera back then.
Sincerely,
Bruce Atchison - author of Deliverance from Jericho and When a Man Loves a
Rabbit.
