Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>breeds (more info?)

I really enjoy this group, I rarely post, because a search will help
me find what I need. Not in this case.

I’m in the process of getting a GSD puppy. I have had a GSD for
most of my life… I understand and appreciate the breed. I have
been extremely lucky with some amazing dogs.

Unfortunately, time (and cancer) took its toll on my 11 yr old GSD
last summer and we lost her. As most people in these groups could
contest, it’s devastating to lose your loyal companion.

I would have loved to go to the same breeder from where my last dog
came from but I got her at the humane society and have no way of
locating the people who gave her up. When I was looking for a GSD I
researched a lot of breeders… some good some not so good. I had
a decision to make in respect to American or German bloodlines…
I thought (for my purpose) that German bloodline was best. After
interviewing about 20-25 breeders on the phone and meeting with about
6 I picked the one I felt most comfortable with. I did all the right
things… visited with the parents, check around… I really
liked this mom pop set up they had going.

This is where I need your help. I have never seen the mother with the
pups… the mother is a little on the nervous side but the father
is a phenomenal dog (Schuzund II). They all live together in a home
setting. When I settled with this breeder I was told that this was a
repeat breeding (she was only bred once before). I know I’m
supposed to wait 8 weeks to get the dog… but my concerns are as
follows:

There were only 2 pups in the littler
The mother is separated from the pups at 6 weeks, or earlier (probably
because she has poor manners)
I was told that this was the 2nd breeding but came to find out
it’s the 3rd
They intend to breed her again when she comes into heat (not wait a
year)… the Vet checked her out and said it was OK
The dog I’m getting was the second one born and she was born
caesarian.

Although there might be some points of concern I’m excited
thinking of moving forward… but I’d really like to hear
from you folks.

If I was buying a pup, I would not purchase one produced from a bitch with a
nervous temperament.

You want to get a pup produced from a mama dog that has a rock solid
temperament, with good nerves. A big part of a puppy's personality is
obtained through genetics. We have seen this happen, first hand, with our
rescue dogs.

German Shepherds are not overly friendly with folks outside of their inner
circle of friends, but they should NOT NOT NOT be nervous. If you read up
on the description of the GSD, you will read that this is not an acceptable
temperament for the breed standard.

Best wishes!

Yours in GSDs and rescue,

Lea

This is the thing of greatest concern to me. Poor temperament ends up
killing more dogs than physical problems. Poor temperament is genetic.
You can moderate poor temperament with careful upbringing, but you can't
fix it.

All may be well, but there are a couple of things I would clarify if I
were you:

Is the dam always nervous, or is what you were seeing anxiety related
to the pups?

Was it the 2nd or 3rd breeding, or did she only "take" twice, or are
you confusing # of studs with # of breedings/litters?

Reason for separating at 6 weeks (which I agree with, btw, for gsd, or
at week 7).

What traits did they see in the 1st litter that warranted a repeat
breeding and did they let that litter grow out enough to make that
determination?

How long between the delivery of the 1st pup and the ceasarian to
deliver the one you're getting? If it were me, I might even want to
talk to the vet who did that surgery to eliminate congenital defect.
