If you want to know how much water fits in the tank, then that is the only
way anyway, because you are loosing quite a bit of space for gravel,
decoration, machinery, empty space on top of tank, etc. While the water
volume can be very valuable for e.g. medication, it is a different number
than the nominal size of a tank.
Therefore I prefer the European custom where tank size is specified in
outside dimensions (e.g 50x50x100) instead of by volume such that you cannot
confuse nominal size and water content.
