Sick fish

Too late he's passed away to fish heaven & I have one lonely fish. Any
signs to look out for when buying a new one? Will the older fantail
bully a new smaller one?

Firstly, I would leave adding anything new to the tank for a good couple
of months; if there's been a disease in the tank (and hiding at the
bottom not moving much sounds like a sick fish - that or water quality -
have you tested?) you don't want to introduce a new fish to it. Leave it
for a while till you're sure your other fish is ok.
