Babies coming home - need help with perches - Hello everyone, I am about to become the proud owner of an African Grey (I'm expecting the new arrival around 25th May so not long to go now) The cage I bought (like every cage I've seen) came with dowel perches and I am looking to replace these with so

My two CAGs really love to chew up their rope perches, making them useless
in no time. On average they destroy one rope perch a month each despite
having other perches (wood and cement), toys and foraging bowls in their
cages. I have a tremendous collection of those plastic screw ends from the
perches they've destroyed. I've tried substitutes, such as PVC pipe wrapped
in cotton twine, but one of may CAGs started plucking. I suspect this was
because the PVC perches weren't as much fun (and harder) to destroy!

Replacing two perches a month gets a little pricey. I was wondering if
anyone knows of a supplier where I can purchase just the brightly colored
cotton rope, like the kind used in the Comfy rope perches?

Thanks!

I am sure that PVC is not good for parrots. It contains chemicals that
are poisonous.
There are many warnings against the use of PVC for young childrens
toys.
I am in the UK and I buy my hessian rope from my local DIY super store.
Perhaps you could use this and dye with safe vegetable dyes.

Have you tried the catalog Dr.s Foster &Smith? I get mine from there
along with about anything you could imagine to make your own bird toys
with. Its much cheaper to make your own.
Also branches from real trees work best of all. They love peeling
the bark, just make sure you get your branches from trees that haven't
been sprayed or that are near the road where exhaust fumes can
contaminant them.Pine, poplar and redbud work best.Norma

How about trying 1/4 " leather rope from an avian pet store. They are
described as

Leather Thongs Straps Laces Safe Vegetable Tanned for Bird Parrot Toys, 1/4"
x 36" - 44" Long

These things last for about a month, but could last much longer if somone
has the strength to tie super tight knots to offset the CAG's beak work.
They have other uses aside for parrots. I used a piece for tying a loop to
my walking cane to support it around my wrist while signing my credit card.
I am sure there are other uses.

Those are great and you can buy the big wooden beads to string on the
leather strips for even more fun. They last my cags a longtime but my G
Too can destroy them in a day or two.My cags like card board boxes
better than anything.Bob is never happier than when he has a huge box
on top of his cage to chew up and play in.
