I needed a rabies shot for our Maltese to get the licensing. Got it
done at a low-cost clinic. We were told that the dog would possibly
become "lethargic", "not feel like eating". Now, it's been 24 hours,
and he looks in bad shape. He's not eating, I just got him to drink a
little water. He's become very very sore/sensitive in the hind
quarters , shivers quite a bit, and can't move around, doesn't seem
able to walk. His hind leg (where the shot went, in the buttocks area)
is immobile, carries it stiffly. Nips when moved or carried. Can't
climb stairs or adjust his position without much difficulty. He's
resting, but I'm worried about him. He's 12. I'm just letting him
rest, and not touching him. He's nipped my wife three times. She tries
walking him but ends up carrying him.

I'm a retiree, on a limited income. My wife called for some help over
the phone, and they said that if he's not throwing up or having the
runs he should pull out of it. They said dogs have "flu-like
symptoms". Is there anything else I need to know? I'm thinking maybe
he may have to be put down, at this age, if there's no change for the
better.

........At his age, after (I imagine) multiple rabies shots, you don't need
to do get any more. Just get an exemption from the vet. Give it another 24
hours, make sure he's drinking something (make sure water is room temp),
try feeding a few times a day with a tasy treat on top of a bit of his usual
dog food. If no change, take him to the vet.
