Our fires are over for the year here, thank God, but we're still
dealing with the aftermath. I know what you're going through on
this. Prayers that you get some rain, that the fires are controled
before they threaten your mom's house. Prayers for your mom too, with
the tumor that's been discovered, and for the whirlwind of things
going on around you and Nancy with health and work. Let us know what
the surgeon says on tuesday.

Thanks, I will.
I can't understand what kind of mental imbalance would cause a person to
start a fire in windy conditions. Last night another fire broke out in San
Bernardino; this one was on Little Mountain in the northwest part of town.
The fire department immediately evacuated 40 families whose homes were
threatened.
It's still about 3 miles from mom's place and 4 or 5 from Pat's place. >> Stay informed about: Purrs requested for a wide range of issues |

Mom's neighborhood is now under voluntary evacuation. We're keeping
fingers and paws crossed that it doesn't become mandatory evac.
Meanwhile she's getting stuff packed up in her van so she'll be ready to
bug out to my brother's place if the mandatory order is issued. >> Stay informed about: Purrs requested for a wide range of issues |

Many, many, many purrs that your mother's tumor is benign...my sister
had an ovarian cyst removed last Tuesday that was the size of a small
watermelon! (Sister says "I just thought I was getting REALLY fat...")
She got the news yesterday that it tested non-cancerous. Whew!

I thought about your move away from this area and wondered how the
family still here were doing. It is predicted that the devil-winds
will subside this evening, making the fires more easily
controlled....I certainly hope so!

I asked this very question at work today in the lunchroom, and the
answer I got was, "The same kind of people who fly planes into buildings."
Well, maybe. But if it is terrorism, the terrorists are being awfully
quiet about it. Economic damage and loss-of-life notwithstanding, if
people don't know it's a terrorist act, they (other than those in the
direct line of fire) are not going to feel *terror*, and isn't that the
point? I was terrorized by 9/11 and I'm 3000 miles from ground zero.
But, although I'm disturbed by these fires, and concerned for people
and animals, I certainly don't feel *fear*, for myself. So no, I don't
think terrorism has anything to do with this.
I always thought these late summer/early fall fires in California were
started by morons throwing lit cigarette butts out car windows and so
forth.

Unfortunately in the last few years investigators have found evidence
that a lot of the larger fires have been arson-caused. Evidence suggests
that 3 of the 4 fires now endangering my mom and brother were started
intentionally.
Law enforcement officials have also been going through neighborhoods
under mandatory evacuation orders, 15 to 30 minutes after the property
owners have evacuated, and caught looters going though the evacuated
houses. Sick, sick, sick people. >> Stay informed about: Purrs requested for a wide range of issues |

Then you wonder why people in endangered areas (whether fire or flood
or some other potential disaster) won't leave??

Thanks, I'll pass that along to her. She goes in for surgery Monday.

I'm sure hoping so. Turns out the voluntary evacuation was due to smoke
and ash, not fire danger. So we're just hoping it remains that way.

Ouch! I can appreciate that. Fortunately my knee is feeling a lot better
today than it has for the last two weeks. I go in for an MRI on
Thursday, then I see the surgeon again the first week in November.

No mental imbalance at all, just plain old all-American business
sense. Most of the major fires in Greece in recent years were
started by property developers wanting inconvenient forests out
of the way of their plans.
They will presumably argue that reafforestation would risk a
recurrence so they should get the chance to concrete over as
much of the burnt areas as they can buy up
