Post subject: New Puppy
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>health (more info?)

I have a 12 year old male Chiuahuah Manchester.
My new business is keeping me away form home in the late afternoon and
evenings.
My Chiuahuah has been around other dogs as I have kept a couple of dogs for
my freinds during moves and he always seems happy when other dogs are
around.
We have been given a 2 week old female Chiuahuah puppy that we are picking
up tonight.
I think the other dog will keep him company since I am having to be away for
my business and he will not be lonely.
My question is this, my 12 year old Chiuahuah Manchester is up to date on
all his shots inlcuding parvo vacine and has been kept up to date for 12
years. The puppy however has not had any shots which I will take care of
tomrrow when I take her to the vet.
Can my 12 year old Chiuahuah Manchester catch anything from the puppy since
he is up to date on all his vacinations or how or should I keep them away
from each other and if so for how long so my 12 year old will not catch
anything for the new puppy that has had no shots?

As long as your 12yo is up to date on everything (parvo being the most
important) then all should be fine. The only thing you really can't protect
against is worms but its not usually a big concern when puppies are
introduced to older dogs. Your puppy will be dewormed over the next 8
weeks, most likely, although some vets are finally testing for worms rather
than just automatically dosing for them. The only other possibility that is
considered ordinary would be kennel cough...if the puppy is coming from a
shelter or boarding environment. Otherwise happy puppy-rearing.

Why in the world are you considering taking this puppy at 2 weeks of age?
That is at least 6 weeks too early for a puppy to leave the litter, and with
toy pups, more like 8-10 weeks too early. Puppies are not weaned at 2 weeks,
and they need to stay with their mother and litter for temperament,
socialization, development and other purposes. Additionally, at 2 weeks of
age, a toy puppy will be VERY fragile, and unlikely to survive without round
the clock care - it only takes a short time for a puppy to become
hypoglycemic and die. If you are not VERY experienced in caring for newborn
orphan puppies, you have no business taking this puppy, and whoever is
letting you have it is horribly irresponsible. Chances of this pup surviving
in these circumstances are slim to none, regardless of its vaccination
situation. Please reconsider this terrible, cruel idea.

Thanks for the replies.
Also, my bad, the puppy is 4 months old. At first I thought it was 2 months
not 2 weeks but when we went there last night it was actaully 4 months old.
