The people breeding these mixes rarely raise the puppy in the appropriate
environment. This behavior is common for puppies raised in, and spending
most of their time in, cages. Out of necessity they learn that they must
accept being dirty. Eventually they become habituated into that behavior.
Put the crate away. Instead use a larger area, an "x-pen" or exercise
pen. This will simply confine him to an area you can clean up easily.
It will also give him the opportunity to develop new habits. Since you
intend to teach him that relieving himself indoors is OK my usual
objections to this set up don't apply. It is important that you keep the
area as clean as possible. If he dirties himself, bathe him ASAP. You
want to undo his acceptance of being dirty.
Schedule his times with the litter box. Every two hours PLUS about five
minutes after eating, waking up from any sleep, and five minutes into any
play session.
