I grow hornwort in a separate tank and put it in with the goldfish.
They love to eat it but I just replace it with new plants after it
gets too bare.

I also have 2 Amazon swords in with the goldfish and they haven't
eaten them yet. I don't think they like thick tough plants.

The big leafy plants tend to last longer, but I find they have trouble growing
in
a small tank.

The long thin plants (not sure of the name but they are thin and not leafy) are
destroyed
almost immediately when my two moors get to it.

Any of the Anubias and Microsorum works well, don't get touched much. I also
have Spiral and Corkscrew Vals, Rotala Rotundifolia and Elodea (which were
bought for the GF to tear apart as they are cheap) growing so well that they
keep ahead of my GF (a Black Moor and 2 Lionhead in one tank, and 2
Pearlscales in the other). The plants helps keep nitrates down, and the GFs
like to swim through them )as if to see what's on the other side. And these
are my low tech tanks (medium light, no laterite, no CO2).

IMHO, Microsorums are great plants to have in any tank; in the above tanks,
there is the odd O2 bubble, and slow growth rates (but after a year, I've
filled both tanks, and have enough for another tank, from a single large
plant). I my higher tech tank (hight light, reactor CO2 injection), there
are heaps of O2 bubbles from the plants.

Plants that didn't work for me were: Limnophillia (and other fine leaf
plants) (shreaded), Lileopsis (pulled out) and Echinodorus (bits pulled
off).

Cheers,
Poe

I only use anacharis and my fish do nibble on it but not enough to
completely destroy it. I do like that they are getting their leafy greens
from the live plants and I occasionally do throw in some chopped pieces of
(thawed, once frozen) spinach to add to the leafy greens. They need their
vitamins too ya know. Kim From Pittsburgh

It was funny- for the first few months, the fish ignored the anacharis
completely. Then around the time I started feeding peas, they decided to
destroy it completely! I guess they decided, yum, green good! I just got
them another bunch, and they ate half of it in two days. They haven't
touched the lysimachia I put in, tho.

The water chemistry seems to stay good longer with more plants.

Kim,

You are looking for a very narron group of plants that Goldfish don't
bother. Java Fern, Java Moss, and some of the Cryptas they leave alone.

Well i tried a Java Fern in a 20gal with three 2" Comets. They left it alone
for a few days
and then ripped it apart on the 5th and 6th day.

anubia and java fern are fine. Kois would still try to eat them. I have to
cut plants back because of tremendous growth.
