Durham Society Rescues Animals From Puppy Mill

Posted: Today at 1:28 a.m.
Updated: Today at 8:59 a.m.

Durham — The Animal Protection Society of Durham assisted in rescuing
animals from a puppy mill in Hillsville, Va., that owned more than 1,000
animals.

The Humane Society of the United States uncovered the puppy mill after a
5-month-long investigation. HSUS selected the APS, along with other shelters
along the East Coast, to help rescue the animals.

APS members drove up to Huntsville on Thursday and took home 30 dogs and
puppies. At the Durham shelter, the dogs were medically evaluated and
bathed.

APS is asking those interested in adopting the dogs to check out their
pictures online and submit applications by email or fax. The animals will be
on public display next week.

In puppy mills, animals are kept in often deplorable conditions for
commercial breeding purposes.

These dogs are making their way up to the local rescues also. Montgomery
County Animal Shelter just got in 100 of these guys. Sad thing is that they
weren't able to shut operations down, just convince the guy to keep the # of
dogs to a maintainable level. The guy released something like 980 dogs, and
kept 100 to continue operations.

I believe that just about all the dogs are small breeds. As long as they
pass health/temperament tests, most would be adoptable.

The female, Suzie, in the photo's I posted, caught my eye.

IMHO, no one should be allowed to be licensed to keep 500 dogs.

As a breeder? Way too many dogs to care for properly, way too much
over-breeding, hence puppy mill.

One of the fastest, most successful working sleddog kennels
has several hundred dogs, with between 60-90 puppies every
year. Their dogs are in extremely (extremely!) high demand,
every puppy gets walked or run every day, and the place is
fastidiously clean. You may disagree with what they're
doing (and in my experience you'll disagree with what
they're doing while knowing absolutely nothing about it
'cause you're an ignorant jackass) but you can't claim that
the dogs aren't receiving "proper" care and you can't claim
that it's a puppy mill. Or rather, you can claim those
things but you'd be wrong.

What's your cut-off point number, then, between a good and bad
breeder?

To tell you the truth, I don't really know. I just know that 500 onsite
dogs denotes to me, puppy mill. One would have to keep quite a few breeding
dogs to end up with 500 dogs on site IMO. And the person in this article
had over 1000 dogs on-site.

There's the problem. It should suggest to you a puppy mill,
not "denote" (and are you sure you know what the word
"denote" actually means?), and you'd need more information
in order to know one way or the other.

It would look pretty lousy if, as part of an anti-puppy mill
campaign, one organised a photo shoot at a 500 dog kennel and
found lots of well-kept and well-bred dogs.

While I generally agree with you, broad assertions can put us
into the PeTA-style method of branding.

The way I think of it is, it's hard enough to regulate puppy mills as it is.
Most of them have simply atrocious conditions. Locally here, just a week or
two ago, animal control moved over 100 dogs out of a woman's house, a
breeder. If we are truly trying to regulate and rid ourselves of these
horrible puppy mills, we shouldn't be handing out licesnses for up to 500
dogs. That is simply too many dogs for any one operation to handle
properly, care for properly, socialize properly etc. IMO. As was described
in the articles about this particular breeder, the one the original story
was about, it was said the breeding dogs were kept in wire cages. I find
that so sad, to think that these dogs are kept in cages their whole lives,
to breed puppies.

I will say, although I'm not a PETA member, I do agree with some of their
causes. I am against fur farms, own a couple quality fake fur coats, but
would never buy a real fur coat. I do donate to many animal causes though,
including a number of ones farm-related. Humane treatment of farm animals,
Farm Sanctuary, etc. I also contribute to a couple organizations on
educating people about animals and legal defense funds for animals, etc.
Yes, I love dogs, but I also love animals in general and support many varied
animal causes. Puppy mills are horrible, and I think we must do what ever
we can to get them out of business. Remember years ago, when pet stores
actually sold dogs and cats?

How about if there are 500 employees?

They still do. Or haven't you been to the mall lately?

It's possible that what's going on here is that "puppy mill"
is morphing into a more general derogatory. Instead of
using it to refer to specific abuses they're using it to
refer to large breeding operations they don't like.

Pet stores here do not sell dogs. It's been years since we've had a pet
store that actually kept dogs on site. Some of the pet stores hold
adopt-a-thons, but the only organizations that are allowed to bring their
animals are non-profit rescues. I just enquired as to whether, if we kept
the puppies, we could participate in an adopt-a-thon, so I know what the
current regulations are.
