Hi i am getting a new puppy in a few weeks (they are due to be born on
friday) and have been trying to think of a name, i am friends with the
breeder so i will get to see them and pick out what puppy i want, i also
want them to start to call him by his name, but i dont know what to call
him!

any ideas? How did you guys find the right name for your puppy ? (i also
know that i should wait and see what the pup is like before setting on a
name, but i just want some idea)

I suggest picking beforehand a few you particularly like, and then seeing
how the personality develops and which one might fit. In the weeks before we
went to the pound to adopt a dog, we started writing names we liked on a
whiteboard on the fridge. Every day we crossed some off until we were left
with about 5.

After we chose our dog, we had to wait a week to bring him home. Which gave
us time to narrow down the names to two, I think. By the day after we'd
brought him home, it was easy to see his personality was more suited to
Orson than to Otis.

The only thing we knew about Khan prior to getting him was that he was a
large, handsome dog, with possibly no housetraining. We went with his
name because a) he is quite a handsome fellow and needed a name fit for
kings and b) we thought that he was going to wreak havoc in the house,
eating everything in sight, digging holes in the floor, etc. Naming him
after Ghenghis Khan seemed to be the logical choice/ best compromise.

If we ever get that girl dog we want, DH says that he has a name picked
out for her. Turns out, it's Ursula. All I can say is, Over My Dead
Body. Can you imagine, a Malamute named Ursula? That sounds like a
girl who'd wanna walk around with tiaras and rhinestone collars

Heh. Our friend who arranged for Bella to come to us had her named
Scout. This girl is no Scout, but a fine Bella. I keep trying to change
her name to Spot, but she'll have nothing to do with that name...

But all of our dogs have multiple names...

Tracy (Mr. Peoples, Buddy)
Duchess (the Duchess of Doodle, Doodle, Dude, Poodle)
Bella (Blah Blah, Bay-low, Baby)

All of my dogs were named after we got them. Some went without names for
several weeks (to include foster dogs) because the names that suited them
aesthetic wise didn't suit their personalities and vice versa. We've even
renamed some rescue dogs for that same reason. Our Min. Dachshund, Pebbles,
got her name because we were fighting over which names we liked when the
Flinstones came on lol. It certainly doesn't suit her. Hoover or some
really snotty name would be more fitting. My Boxer Summer got her name
because my daughter and I were squabbling (she liked cutesy names and I
didn't). Finally I said "you know what? its Summer, we should just call
her Summer and be done with it!" I wasn't serious but Amie grabbed onto the
name so it stuck.

We do have a name picked out for our next Lab puppy. I've always loved the
name Oakley (ever since my teen days when Oakley sunglasses were all the
thing..along with Swatch watches) and if it ends up not being quite
masculine enough, we can shorten it to Oak. Otherwise we try to call em
like we see em.

Know your looking for dogs, but we have cats now and hopefully soon a Black Lab.

Cats, both black sweethearts (only 5 months old). Pepper the male, who we also
call Chili Pepper - full of beans. Chloe - the female.

For the dog it's either Pinot (as in Noir) or Wino. The wife and I are both into
wine - wouldn't call myself an expert but do have a good cellar (good place to
retreat after a tough day). I'm partial to Wino but my wife prefers Pinot (more
dignified). I figure she'll win on this one - I'm only the male in this
relationship after all :->.

I really like the name Ursula...however it's just too many syllables for
my taste. I like one or two syllable names. I admit to sometimes,
though, getting my guys' names mixed up! Sometimes I call one the
wrong name, sometimes I jumble them up!
Coda (collie x) becomes Codi
and Bodhi (Belgian Sheepdog) gets called Bodha way too often by
others*.
We've also got Kaytee (longhaired black & white cat, came pre-named
from the people who left her with us), and Little (a shorthair pale dilute
calico. A rotten mean little thing someone left in our ditch as a wee
little
baby).

The next dog, I think, will be a girl-dog. *If* she turns out to be a
Cardigan
(like my husband wants), she'll most likely be named Lisa, or Cici (I want
to incorporate the name Felicity into the reg'd name), or maybe Tuesok
(Hungarian for "Cricket").
*If*, by some chance I get my way & she ends up being another BSD,
I want to name her Vasha. (I just can't see Vasha being a good name
for a CWC!)
*If* she turns out to a Boy...well, I just don't know!

Never thought of that. That'll crack DH up, for sure. My favorite song
for her is the Can-Can song sung with "Bella" as the only lyric. And
Doodle loves my version of the Orphan Annie (like the one that was on
the radio when my folks were kids) song. (Who's that little doodle girl?
She's livin' in her doodle world. Who can it be? It's little orphan
Duchie.) Actually, Doodle loves all her special songs and she has the
most.

Helpful, you ain't. People have enough trouble with Khan (Kong, Can,
Cain, ...), I don't even want to begin with Hat.... I suggested Marie
(after Mme. Curie), but DH says no dorky scientist names. Ticked me off
sufficiently for me to consider suggesting Brunhilde, but I do pity the
dog that ends up with that name.

That's one of my gripes with that name. Plus, I can't find a way to
shorten it for a nick name. We've been thinking that Khan's sis ought
to be a famous lady, possibly royalty, but can't think of an appropriate
name. Cleopatra is right out.
