I've read somewhere that you can safely use jello with the added bonus
that if the birds chew the wood, there's a little flavor to it.

Doesn't jello go off?

You have to have the jello really hot and dependending on the thickness
of the item you want dyed, leave it in the jello until it gets absorbed
all the way into the wood and then it won't rub off.

apparently, in addition to jello, un-sweetened kool-aid comes in a lot of
colors.

The only bird safe dye that can be used in wood is human grade food
coloring. Basically it is the same stuff used to color food, used mostly
for baking but used for many other things as well (green beer on St.
Patricks day), only problem is that if you get it wet it will bleed all
over the place, so take the toys out when you clean your cage or mist
your bird. We run a small bird toy company here in Mexico and use food
coloring not only to color the wood but the sisal rope as well.

Hope this helps.

NOT a good idea at all. The added flavour will encourage the bird to eat
the wood rather than just play/tear it apart and play with it.
