I made a hole in my outdoor parakeet aviary so that they could come and
go as they wish... I had wondered whether this might work or not and I
know that it will undoubtedly generate protest but I was surprised and
quite pleased to see them learn to come and go out into the wild... I
have about 30 parakeets in a large outdoor aviary.. About 4 weeks ago
I made a small opening and put a perch that extended in and out of the
cage. I made the hole just small enough where they can get through and
put it quite high to discourage rodents, snakes etc. from entering
easily.. Anyway it seems that about 6 of the birds have learned to
come and go and do so frequently... I am surprised about how much time
they choose to stay in the cage and also surprised that only about 6 of
them do go out... maybe that will change with time.. I guess that the
food, water, companionship, shelter and nesting boxes keep them coming
back.. I am not sure how it will turn out but so far so good... They
are very fast flyers and it is quite a thrill to see them fly around..
I am worried about the hawks though..

I think you have just set up a very nice feeding spot for all of the
bird-eating wildlife your area.

Well done. I have thought about doing this sort of thing too.

Yes, there are some things to worry about, such as other birds getting in to
your aviary, and your birds getting attacked while out of your aviary.

There is also the possibility (depending upon where you live) that your
birds will fly away with a passing flock and then get lost and not be able
to return home. That is what happened to a budgie that I had living outside
my aviary for a couple of months after it escaped.

How the hell would you know if it got lost? It's just as likely that
some other animal ripped it open and made a meal of it. Or maybe it
flew in front of a SUV and got wedged in the grill. Or that kid down
the street that likes to torture small animals caught it and kept it
alive for a week while torturing it.

It's possible, as I said.

No. I don't know what a SUV is, but I assume it's some sort of car. This
bird never went far from the aviary (certainly not near a road) unless other
birds flew by.

Nope, I know that kid and he could never have caught this budgie. I
certainly couldn't and I tried several ways.

Oh sorry, you were just trying to be belligerent as usual. Carry on...

Man oh man, I have to say when you post you make me laugh and its not that
your funny, its your utter lack of compassion and a complete diseregard for
the understanding of what it is to be ignorant, keep it up, I get a good
laugh in here, and laughing enlightens the soul. Peace

I would have to say you worry about more than just the hawks, I know I
would. They are probaly in thier glory, you have given them the gift of
freedom. How many of them were born and raised in the aviary? those are the
ones I would be extremly worried about venturing out, they only know the
safety inside your aviary. Hope all works well.

Stuffing your head up your ass to avoid the truth about your ignorance
doesn't change anything. You can not possible know what happened to
your bird. It's that simple and yet you can't comprehend it.

I know that you are an expert on knowing what it is to be ignorant, so
why don't you tell us all about it?

Thanks for explaining.

We seem to have ventured off-topic somewhat...
