Archived from groups: alt>animals>ethics>vegetarian, others (more info?)

For years British farmers have gotten fat on subsidies and easy
street, they pumped our produce full of pesticides and herbicides
without a care for anybody but themselves. The public is slowly waking
up.

Viva Organic. This is why we must fight the GM devils.

Sales of organic food top pounds 1bn for the first time as families
come back for more

Once it was the preserve of health obsessives and eco-conscious
vegetarians. Now the organic food industry has come of age: its annual
sales in Britain have topped pounds 1bn for the first time, prompting
observers to talk of a revolution in British eating habits.

The desire for better tasting meals and fears for the safety of food
have led to the market growing 10% in a year, making Britain the third
largest market in the world for organic produce, behind the US, whose
sales total pounds 5.9bn, and Germany, pounds 1.6bn.

We spend pounds 53 a year per household on organic food, but there is
a long way to go before it dominates the market: the total British
family budget for food and non-alcoholic drinks for a year is pounds
2,200.

A report into the state of the organic market and agriculture in the
UK produced yesterday by the Soil Association, which certifies organic
produce, shows that fruit and vegetables are the foods most likely to
be tried by new organic consumers, with better health and better taste
the primary motivating factors.

Food quality, animal welfare, environmental benefits and avoidance of
GM ingredients are also significant influences. Those who do not buy
organic food say the extra cost is the biggest deterrent.

The most remarkable change has been in the demand for baby food.
Parents' fears for what their infants may be eating along with their
vegetable and fruit purees has led to three in four babies being fed
only with organic lines. Manufacturers have been forced to cancel
orders for ingredients with traditional farmers and switch to
guaranteeing all ingredients are organic.

BS. There's nothing wrong with GM foods. GM companies are developing crops
that produce more food and grow in poor soil, so that people in third world
countries can planet them.

Some people don't have a choice what to eat or have an opportunity to be
snobbish about it. They're just glad to be able to eat.

NOT Kay. She's far too well educated to say 'gotten'.

I see Pete has had the operation.

It originates from a notorious nuisance poster. He's been
around a while, likes people to reply to his posts, hates
women and claims to promote animal rights. Perhaps his
mother treated him like a dog. If you go to Google groups
uk.rec. birdwatching and read back to end of May you should
find posts of mine on this person.

He has recently taken to changing his pseudonym for nearly
every post, presumably to avoid being killfiled. His
signature does_not_change, so I with this info I am throwing
you a lifeline! But even if you continue to read his posts
never, ever respond - in any way, shape or form.

For explaining this to you, I expect to be punished with
accusations of undertaking unspeakable acts with caprine
animals, one of his favourite themes.

Assuming pete stays true to form (my killfiling is such that I never see
his posts) do not be surprised if he carries on a lengthy discussion
between two or more of his personas.

He appears sometimes not to realise he is talking with himself.

All in all its best to leave it to his therapist so as not to adversely
influence his recovery (if any).
