Hmmmmm thats strange, seems the AC mini's are the ones that are
nortoriously noisey anymore, and the older models such as the 300 and
all were the quiet ones. I bought 6 AC20 Mini's not more than 3 months
ago and returned all but one of them for replacments due to their
rattling noisey sounds.....and still bropught home 5 more noisey
ones.....Swapped impellers between them and the noise abated....so the
noise problem is with the impellers. I checked them all against the
impeller that did not make the noise......and found piece of flash
material from the manufacturing process on the impeller assemblys,
removed the flash and cleaned em up and noise went away on all but one
AC20....A dab of silicone on the drive tang of impeller to shaft
connection that I allowed to setup and cure for a day solved that
noisey problem as well.....as it also seems a lot of the impellers n
the shafts are not ina perfectly round hole, but as they wear they do
become quiet......Check the impeller carefully, make sure your intake
line to the pump is seated in the pump housing slot, and there is
absolutely no air entering the inlet side as just a bubble makes a
heck of a racket.......All mine are doing fine, and last I looked that
dab of silicone was gone, but pump is now quiet. Aqua Clears are good
hob type filters.

Have an Aquaclear 300 on my 50g. Does a good job but it's a little
too noisy for the location (impeller buzz/rattle, not water noise).
Cleaned it thoroughly & put in a new impeller, no change. Since I got
the filter used, I don't know if it was ever (virtually) silent like
my old Aquaclear Mini was. I like the easy maintenance of the HOB
style, but thinking I'll change to a Fluval 304 (305 now?) if that's
what it takes for peace & quiet to return to our living room....
Advice please.
