Wew... I'm just back from the vets after thinking Nemo took a turn for
the worse.

I woke up this morning and he was in the tube at the bottom of the
cage. He came out with a head tilt and staggered around, failing
miserably to keep his balance. He couldn't climb the cage, and could
only just manage to struggle slowly up the slope upto the second
floor, nearly falling off the edge as he staggered up.

Emergency call to the vets and he's sure it was an ear infection,
which I'd handily read a bit about before getting the boys.

He's had an injection and I've been given a 2 dose/day oral medication
for 5 days.

I've removed the slope so he can't climb up on other things and damage
himself, while the other two can go about their business wondering why
their brother is acting weird. Actually no, they probably couldn't
careless! *sniff sniff* ... oh look, treats!

Apparently he should be better in 5 days orso, so scare over I hope!
:o)

Other possibilities include tumors, head trauma, and a few other
things. You mentioned a med I'm not familiar with. Baytril is a
standard antibiotic. One of my girls had a head tilt problem (still
does to a small degree) over a year ago and when she didn't seem to
respond to antibiotics (assuming inner ear infection) she was treated
with Prednisone, an antiinflammatory which was intended to reduce
pressure on a nerve that might be the result of either a tumor or some
kind of injury. Perhaps if he doesn't respond to the antibiotics, your
vet might consider this. It's all just guesswork, but might be worth
looking in to.

No idea.. this stroke business though...... he is loosing more control
over opening his right eye all the time. It's pretty bad now, almost
constant.

Perhaps it's not an ear infection and you're right. :o(

This is what the vet gave him/me/did:

Baytril 2.5% Oral Solution (this is for me to give twice a day for 5
days)

Bottle/cap Dalplas 25ml (the tube/syringe thing I use I assume)

Injection 1 consisted of:
- Dexadreson
- Baytril 2.5% Injection

Jo, if it was a stroke..... and that's quite worrying - he's only
young.... will this damage be permanent? The loss of balance, head
tilt and the loosing control of his right eye muscles or whatever?
Would it get worse?

Thanks for the help... the poor, poor little bastard.

Time to read about how strokes are caused..... :o(

Does he have breathing difficulties at all? This is what caused a stroke
in my late rat Oscar - lack of oxygen to the brain. The vet treated him for
an ear infection, but said it was possible he'd had a stroke, which became
obvious after anti-biotics had no effect. Oscar died a week later, but he
was two years old and had on-going respiratory problems.

Hope your little guy soon recovers - give him a little cuddle from me :o)
and keep us updated with how he's doing.

Peace of mind (kind of..) but not for Nemo - The appointment's booked for 10:30am tomorrow. Phewwww. I was watching Nemo again today and he's still sneezing a fair bit. His left eye kept closing by itself earlier and he kept trying to open it but it kept shutting. Eventually it stayed open.....

Cataracts and infection - My one year old rat, Mona, recently developed Cataracts in both eyes and now has an infection in her left eye. Her eye is bulging and red (it was originally black). I took her to the vet and have been giving her eye drops for about 5 days. The eye drops....

Arthritic swelling caused by infection of navel - Does anyone have any experience of babies developing swelling in their joints just after birth?
